From what I was told, that button turns on the accoustic/"theatrical" affects. I don't really notice a difference but if you put on some Beethoven and crank it up with the accoustic on it really does sound like an Opera house!

The button engages some DSP (Digital Sound Processing) on the '04s when on. I can hear the difference. When it is off, it sounds like regular 12 speaker stereo. When it is on it sounds more full, the sound field is greatly increased.

Another feature is when it is on, the radio will automatically switch the sound as if the button is off (light remains on) to indicate to the driver when the station signal is weakening.

Also, my HK changes the overall volume level automatically to adjust for the ambient noise level in the vehicle. Very cool.

My passenger side front speaker buzzes also. Mostly when listening to the radio. Seems to work better with CDs, especially the Demo CD that came with the car. I am going to have them look at it when I take it in for the first service.

BTW, what is DME and how does it affect my vehicle cold starting? My car seems to start a little hard first thing in the morning. It starts easier if I let the electric fuel pump prime the lines for a few seconds before engaging the starter.

In my 2000 328i the front passenger speaker rattles too! And yes, I F**kin hate it too! I've had it into the dealership four times. The first time, they said it was the amp so they replaced it. Then I took it back and they replaced the door speaker, then they checked it a couple more times and still couldn't fix it.

It is covered under warranty, but I guess you never know who your gonna get to look at the problem. I take it back to the same dealership and get a different answer each time. I am now looking at upgrading the complete system, but would not be happy if the rattle was something else.

I got this!

My buddy recently purchased a new sub setup and I am installing it for him. I was looking up some wiring diagrams and stumbled onto this thread.
If you drop the sub and amp combination in the trunk you can see up just below the rear deck in the bmw 3 series. You could just shove something in there in order to keep the deck from rattling or really get into it and do a nice job by going along any edges and adding maybe weather stripping.
But no-one will see up in there so just shove something in there like a rolled up and tapped t-shirt or towel. That takes care of it. I know it was really annoying riding in his car when it sounded like his trunk was gonna rattle right off the car! Def not a blown speaker or anything just a shotty job by BMW. Hope this helps.
BTW its a 2001 BMW 330ci w/ high quality sound option.

DME is Digital Motor Electronics. In other words, it is the CPU that controls the engine and many of the other functions of the car. It doesn't just affect your cold start, it makes all the decisions about cold start. Undoubtedly, based on engine temperature, it will adjust timing, etc. to deal with a cold start.

The dealer told me (during my Steptronic woes) that the DME tells the transmission when to shift, and that the shift points are at a higher RPM when cold to prevent stalling, stumbling, etc. I watched the tach one day and this is indeed true.

On most fuel injected cars, I assume BMW as well, there is a check valve in the fuel line to prevent fuel leaking back so you have fuel on startup to prevent the situation you describe. Don't know if your situation is normal or not. I can't really say that I have noticed this on mine.

Maybe I exaggerated the hard start thing. It starts up fine and purrs like a kitten right from the get-go once it's started. So I think the DME is doing its job as far as timing, fuel mix etc. for a cold start.

How long does it take for yours to turn over? For mine it's like less than 2 secs. More like 1.5 seconds. That's on a cold start. I am sure BMW would consider that within spec.

My Toyota Corolla starts almost instantly.

My front passenger side speaker has rattled since day one. I had it replaced and the noise never went away. Within the past two weeks or so the drivers side speaker has started to rattle too. I have noticed that if I turn the bass down and keep the volume down, I don't notice it as much [:(] but it does drive me crazy.

Gib-McFragger (or anybody): do you know where I can get more info on the SI, so i can go into my dealership prepared this time? Thanks.

I am going to print that and bring it with me next visit. Cause my speaker is rattling again after they "fixed" it a couple weeks ago.

We'll see what happens.

Thanks for the info.

I hope they have fixed this issue with the 2004 models. I pick mine up tomorrow afternoon.

I'm hoping they have fixed ALL the little bugs sine my '00 328i.
For instance:
- Sunroof button not working intermittently & requiring reset
- Steering wheel volume control sometimes changes the station
- Window regulators - need I say more?
- rattling front suspension
- ability of wheels to attract brake dust from nearby cars :)
