I totally agree with the others . I spent $1500 on a system to replace my HK and sometimes I wonder if it was worth the " disruption " in the interior . Stock looks better and aftermarket sounds better .

if you go aftermarket you'll need to replace the head unit because of the weak signal and no rca outputs from the stock one. You can get amps and speakers and a sub but it won't sound right with the stock head unit so start there first if you decide to go for it .
Oh ye uneducated one![:D] j/k
It is true that there are no rca outputs from the stock one......and the signal is weak because most people try to put a high/low pass filter adapter AFTER the amp....the key is to get your high pass signal from one of the speakers in the rear deck BEFORE the amp. If you do it this way all the power from the deck is going to all other speakers like normal with the factory amp being used for all the factory speakers. Then with that filter adapter installed you can run an amp to some better quality subs and your system will sound 1000times better. All this WITHOUT changing your stock head unit. Truth be told the stock head unit is not THAT bad as people make it seem to be, you just have to know how to integrate other things with it. If no one believes me that it can be done this way....go to the link at the bottom and you can see for yourself. I also have pictures I can post of the high/low filter adapter installation. Comments welcome!!!!

Oh yeah I almost forgot. I only paid 800euro for that entire installation parts and labor!!!!! byaaatch!!![thumb]

If I recall correctly it is the same basic head unit with some slight differencews because of the DSP. That said it is still very, very possible to install the high/low filter adapter on either system from the high level output on one of the rear deck speakers. The wires run right under the backrest portion of the drivers side rear passenger seats and are relatively easily accesible.
In response to the other question: No I do not know anyone who has replace a HK with a JL system. IMHO opinion spending all that extra money is NOT neccesary unless you are thinking about entering your car into a competition. Remember by adding a sub the way I described above you keep all the funtionality of your stock dsp. The main prob with the bmw system is "lack of bass". With a sub installed you can tone down the bass levels on the stock HK system therefore leaving more resources in the stock system for your highs and mids.
I am not a stereo guru but I do love my sounds and like a little "hump" in my trunk[thumb] !
I did a WHOLE lot of research before I finally decided to leave my system stock and just add the sub.
