Glad I could help out. That's what the forums are for.

By the way I came across these links from someone on this forum at one time or another.

I guess we should thank everyone on the forum for their efforts.

Have a look at my post, does that sound like your problem? It's such a nice driving car, but it's driving me nuts at low speeds. I wonder if it's the CDV. What do you think?

So far, I haven't experienced the problem that some people attribute to drive-by-wire. It's funny, because my B5.5 Passat is also DBW, and a lot of people on VWVortex complain about the same problem with the DBW throttle (no CDV), but I never experienced the problem on that car, either.

In any case, based on feel, the only time I notice the effect of the CDV is on the first to second shift (and very rarely, second to third). I don't seem to notice it in bumper-to-bumper traffic where you're staying in first and just constanlty going in and out with the clutch. At exactly which point does your Dad feel the problem? My interpretation of the CDV problem is on that 1st to 2nd shift where you would normaly smoothly release the clutch and match revs--it's kind of like the car is trying to smooth out the clutch release for you, so if you do it, you end up not being able to sense the clutch take-up-point, and the rev-matching sucks--and you get a jerky shift. I've found that by giving the car a touch more throttle than I would otherwise and letting the clutch up a bit faster than I would otherwise, the shift is smooth--but it doesn't seem natural. Since you say you can shift more smoothly than others in your family, I wonder if the problem is really the throttle.

I haven't notice any problem driving at slow speed at all. I just picked up a new 2005 325i 5 speed manual last Saturday (3-5-05). I find that I can very easily drive anywhere from 2 to 20 mph with no difficulty at all. I can feel a little lack of feedback from the clutch (I think) due to the CDV. After the first few miles, shifting is way too easy. One thing I notice is that the car is so darn quiet inside (compaired to what I'm use to) that I can't shift by the sound of the engine if the CD player is on. But, that not something to complain about.

Compaired to my old Toyota pickup (I know, apples and oranges) the trottle response is much more precise. Just to be fair, I only have 195 miles on the 325i and a 170,000 on the Toyota, but Toyota throttle is jerky, and the BMW very smooth.

There isn't any symmetry to the clutch engagement, instead, it seems to depend primarily on the rpm at engagement. That is the way that the digital engine managmenet is set up, I guess. The System is Essentially Contrary to the American Method, but there is some system to it. Dick around with it with an open mind. Consider it as personality or whatever.
