Or me driving like a real man and hitting 6000RPM atleast once a week.
mikev posted on the other thread "im runing at 26 Mpg and rising. however in the summer it goes down to 14!!!! Avg" ... he has a much bigger difference.
At the track I get 8-10 mpg.
However, I get 22-25 in the NSX, and that is with hittin 7500 RPM or more many times each time I drive it.
I also got 25+ in the 325i, with similar driving style. I wind all my cars out to redline or close to redline frequently.
I know we like to think that low MPG equates to big automotive balls, but in all sincerity I think you are probably wasting that MPG cruising around town at lower rpms. You can see how the econometer changes when you reduce the pressure being placed on it by your foot just enough so that you are only giving the car enough gas as is absolutely necessary to maintain your current speed or accelerate. A lead foot in the day to day, and a lot of spirited trips from one stoplight to the next, may be the culprit. You don't have to give it full throttle all of the time, only when necessary. Full throttle at lower RPMs is kind of a waste, since the car often doesn't have enough power at low RPMs to give you the acceleration you seek by giving it full throttle and that gas is essentially wasted.
I would venture a guess that if you consciously change your driving style to avoid full throttle when it is NOT necessary, but otherwise continue driving like a 'real man' (albeit with a little sister in the car) you should see a decent improvement in MPG. YMMV.
