Hows this one:

I got the recall notice on a Wednesday and the following Saturday I go to start the car and it runs very rough and sets a trouble code. Seems as of my car was reading my mail:)

In any event the coils were replaced the following Monday morning and the car runs great and even the mileage has improved a bit--maybe 5-10%:)

I took my car in for an oil & filter change... They had a recall on the coils, even though I have had no problem with them. It turns out they replaced the ignition coils, and now it feels as if the car "hooks-up" quicker immediately after a cold startup. It used to run slow when the engine was cold (which was expected as I baby that engine till she warms up), but now it seems to ask to be driven like it's warmed up when it's cold... (it's either the micro filter and the oil change or the coils) go figure. The car also feels faster, but after spending 125 miles in an e46 325i loaner that's expected so I really can't comment on whether the coils improve acceleration or not.

I just took my 2004 325i in for the recall and was told I already have the BOSCH coils, so nothing was done.

Not sure the build date, but I took delivery late March 04 and custom ordered it in November.

Anyone else have a similar recall experience?

my build date is 03-03 and had them replaced 9 months ago without a recall....they knew then that there was a problem with the old style versus the new style.........but no kept on building them with the old style on some of the 04's.....

Dates of Coil problem

Good info folks, I appreciate it.

Unfortunately I'm sitting in Baghdad, Iraq right now on my 1 year tour of duty here and my 04 330i is back in Virginia. I ordered mine in April 04, if I remember correctly, my build date is May 04 and I took delivery in July 04.

Do you think I'm affected by this recall?

I was home in Oct on R&R leave and she seemed to drive fine, but anything feels better than what we drive over here.

It would be interesting to know the exact dates affected by the recall.

Thanks,

My car drove fine for almost two years without a problem on the old style coils....then all of a sudden one morning it shook, rattled, grunted and had no power........two cylinders misfired..........

NateS,

Based on my experience, I doubt you're affected by it. I took delivery of mine March 28, 2004, so by the time yours hit the assembly line, they'd already made the switch.

I second Orics, best of luck and stay safe.

I had my coils replaced on my 2004 325xi. Wow, what a difference. Noticeable increase in power and more smooth transitions when I shift gears. It does feel like a different car.

I got my ignition coil replaced in Late Nov. via the recall. Last week and I start the car and got for the first time even a rough idle on a cold start. The engine shuttered for about 30 seconds. I gave some gas and eventually smoothed out. The car is a garage at night. What the F*#$, did they mess up my car ?

oops, i had the appt last week, but totoally forgot about it... i had rough idle problem a while back, so took it to the dealer to get something reprogramed. can't remember if it was the ecu or not. (our x5 had to get its ecu replaced, so i'm a bit confused if that was an issue in both cases or not.) fix was ok, but to smooth the idle, i just let it sit for 15 secs, or until the revs hit about 6-700 before pulling out of the driveway. either way, the coil wasn't replaced, so hopefully the reall will smooth out my car.

guess i'll have to call back and reschedule. i'll keep you guys posted.

After being totally amazed by the increase in power after the coil recall, yesterday I went to start my car and it wouldn't start! It was like starting a car without any gas (i would guess). The starter just turned but no ignition. I tried a few times and finally it started, but really rough. I let it idle for a while and since then it's been fine.

Maybe air in the gas line? Maybe a coincidence? Who knows.

After reading all the recall, I called the dealer and gave the car VIN number back in December to check if my car has a recall. The dealer told me 'yes' and I scheduled for one today. I went to a great distance on early morning to get this done on my off day. When I get there, the service advisor scanned my key and looked at me like I am a fool. [screwy]

Then, The service advisor said 'there is no recall on my car'. [???1]
I explained to him what I did and the service guy I called said that my car has a recall, and I am here for that. They said that they cannot and would not do anything for me. [nono]

Would I woke up in the early morning on my off day to travel 50 miles at 6:15 AM to the dealer for nothing? [mad] I have better thing to do on my off day!

I got the letter on Saturday about the recall for my car from BMW of North America. I have not yet called the dealer but right now I am having problems in the morning soemtimes.. the car starts up a little rough but then smooths out after 10 minutes of driving and the car sits in a garage of a temperature of about 50 degrees Farenhiet. I better call them later on today after school and have it checked... I just serviced my car too back in October...

I took mine in yesterday for its recall. They phoned to say my car already has the new Bosch coils. Darn! I thought I was going to get a performance boost.
