its a 1.8 and the comsumption on paper is considerably lower..

the merc is a 1.8l 4 cylinder with a 192 bhp

and has the same 0-60 and top speed than my pocket draining 6 cylinder 2.8

Do you have a warranty with the merc? If not then its going to cost you just as much (if not more) than the BMW.

A 1.8l engine producing 192hp - supercharged - is going to get horrible gas mileage. If you never get on the throttle you'll get great gas mileage - it's going to run the same as a 1.8l naturally aspirated engine will. On the other hand, if you ever get on the gas, you're going to get 12 - 15 mpg most likely - that's not an exageration. Anyways, hope you're happy with whatever you get.

Get a BMW with a diesel engine. If you like the way BMW's drive, you may not like the Mercedes. MB's are typically very serious and have very boring drives. Stick to BMW or checkout the Audi A4 1.8T.

thing is i dont just love a particular make of car i love CARS and new driving experiences.....

i had an a3 1.8t
then i bought a bmw 318ci (very sluggish)
So i went on a power search and found the 2.8 and bit off more than i can chew i have to admit
so seeing as mercedes is a well respected brand (and it must be for a reason) i thought id give it a try......

fuel consump

city 25.5/22.1
xrta urban 44.8/44.1
combined 35.3/33.2

From my experience with Mercs they may have similar power, torque, speed (or perhaps even more these days! CL 65 AMG anyone?) but they don't come close to matching the driving experience of the BMW. You will most certainly miss the creamy turbine-like straight-six over the droning thrashy 4-banger Merc.

You seem to have made up your mind but I will tell you that Mercedes charge a big premium not only for their new cars but also for their parts. If your worried about the dollar then I wouldn't be heading to the dour land of Merc...

It's hard to tell why but BMW seems to be more responsive and stable when it comes to tight curves and fast sweepers. Could be the suspension geometry...
