Ok everyone here is the scoop...........the Position 2 does work on the convertible....the catch here is that the Position 2 that they are referring to is when you are outside the car........putting the key actually into the lock instead of electronic key..........if you put the key into the door lock on the drivers side and turn the key to the right and hold it, it will roll up the passenger window automatically if down........

When I picked up my car today, the technician and I went over this..........also the reason the convertible is different is because they needed the room for things pertaining to the convertible top.............

THe technician thought it crazy too........I told him we want to roll up the passenger with one touch while we are in the car, not outside the car...........lol..........

anyways, my loaner was a 2004 330IA, the ride was very smooth, really nice, I didnt notice any difference in the drive mode and the sport mode (this was talked about on another thread)....the technician said due to it being 6 speed steptronic instead of 5 speed steptronic like mine, the higher rev rpm's were not as pronounced since it has 6 gears now instead of 5.....a longer gear path......if you get my drift on what I mean....I do prefer the 5 speed steptronic.....I asked my technician how come the loaner car has such a smooth ride compared to mine, he said, take out your sport package and 18" wheels and you would have a smooth ride too....hmmmmmmmmm

6-speed?

To the best of my knowledge the steptronic in all 3-series cars are 5-speeds. I beleive only the 7 series and maybe now the new 5 series have 6-speeds. Certainly my 04 330CiC only goes up to 5 in manual mode and all the documents I've seen referred to 5 forward gears.

And about these power windows -- I still say the manual says "ignition position 2", so I'm not sure if I buy the argument your SA used.

Next question, does your remote work to put down the windows and convertible top? Per the manual, page 32, I should be able to hold down the door unlock button on the key and if I keep it held down it will lower all the windows and then the top. It doesn't work on mine, although I think I remember it being demonstrated to me (on my very own car) when I first picked it up. Does it work on yours? Kirby? Tweet? how bout yours?

Sorry to keep bugging you guys with all these nit-picky things, but hey, when we pay $50K for a car we won't it to work like they say it should work, right?

Thanks

If i put the key in the lock on the outside and turn it to the right, my windows and top will go up. Other then that, I believe there is no other way to put the top up/down from outside the car due to safety regulations in the US.

Yes Tweet, what you described is what my technician was trying to explain. The guy who explained this was not my service advisor but actually a BMW technician........also, I thought it strange too, but the sticker on the car in the glove box clearly states 6 speed steptronic, thought this may have something to do with the sliptronic problem as this loaner car just arrived at the dealership.

cwelch, they demonstrated the top down and top up with the key in the door when I purchased the car, but I've never tried it since to see if it still works. If it quits raining this weekend, I'll try that exercise too..........

My manual says for the 2003 Model,

OPENING and CLOSING - VIA THE DOOR LOCK
You can also operate the power windows and the fully-automatic convertible top via the door lock.

Under the section OPENING and CLOSING - VIA THE REMOTE CONTROL - there is no mention of the convertible top in my manual, only the interior lamps, tilt alarm and other alarms if equipped.

Wanna hear something funny? my 04 325i has all windows with auto-up, even the rears. They have a sensitive strip located along the top of the window frame and if you leave your hand/arm out the window, the glass going up presses your arm against the top felt area and the window goes all the way back down... same thing for the moon roof with the auto close feature. I tried it out the other day so I feel safe for the kids.. no hard pressure at all..
now I can scare the hell out of my 9 year old... he he he

My top will go up and down, as well as the windows, using the key outside the car. I was told by the ED folks in Munich that the remote control top up/down feature was disabled as it is illegal in the US. A safety hazard - you could put the top down without actually seeing that the car is in the clear and safe, and someone could get hurt.

top

Mine will go up and down with the key in the lock, but the remote won't do either the windows or the top, despite what it says in the manual.

I wonder if since BMW can so easily disable these things, we might not be able to ENABLE them somehow...

Add that to your defective list - it does go down with key as well.

Quick note:

You can have your remote programmed to activate your top, now the legality I am not sure of.

How do I know ?

I was standing next to the programmer as he showed me the top activation USING THE FACTORY REMOTE !

To me its a non-issue, since I only use the soft top in extreme emergencies anyways..I hate the look of rag-tops with the tops up.. (its just me).

Well.....off to prepare for some Football watching and beer drinking [wave]

Grrrr.... I asked my dad and he said that with both of his convertibles, the top never went/goes down with the key either. Weird [confused]
