What do you guys think, is redlining bad for the car or not? I'm not referring to redlining during normal everyday driving. I mean redlining when you're zipping around, driving a little fast and aggressive.

It's okay with any car as long as you keep up with the maintenance and keep it in good condition. BMWs are made for that kind of stuff, so it's definitely okay. I personally don't do it very often, it's kind of a psychological thing, I feel like the car will get mad at me or something. If I have to race someone or just feel like getting on people's nerves I just shift 500-1000 RPMs before redline, I just don't see that much of a point in taking it all the way to redline unless you're in a SERIOUS race or you're running from the police.

That's exactly what the engines are designed to do, and they are very happy to do it. Our local BMW club tracks their cars all the time, with tons of high-RPM WOT operation, and I've never even HEARD of a problem with an engine (except occasionally with aftermarket superchargers.) [driving2]

Personal experience Dinan55[pray] ? I have always wanted to see if I could out run the cops[scratch] ....never had the balls to do it though.

Although no one would really say that repeatedly or constantly running at redline is good for an engine, it isn't necessarily bad either. If, during R&D, a company realized that all their engines blow at 6500 RPM, then they would adjust the redline accordingly. I frequently let the steptronic shift itself out of first when I'm really trying to get up & go (about 10 minutes ago on the way into the office, at a red light next to a new 911 Turbo...LOL, no contest). On the flip side, running around town at a max of 2500 RPM is indeed bad for an engine. Pop the valve covers off a few of those big yellow Caddies trolling around Florida with a blue hair at the wheel and see what you find [:)]

IMO no.

I’m sure the engineers place the redline at peak performance with room for extra rpms for those drivers that take it to the fuel cut off. I agree with Alex, just keep up the maintenance and enjoy. [burnout]

good point about the design Ghost. the rev limiter is there to keep you from overrevving and blowing you head to smitherines. I shift about 400 rpm shy of my redline, due to the power band losing some steam, the only time i take it higher than that is if i'm diving into a turn and don't want to shift, if i'm matching the revs after i shift for a turn, or if i'm wihpping up a hill and need that extra juice to carry me into the next gear.

being stupid hurts your car, driving it hard and smart does not.

On a side note some rev limiters are there to protect the accessories, not the engine itself (that is if the engine can handle more RPM than the accessories can). I would keep up with those oil changes if you want to red line it. As stated before if you're dumb with your car bad things will happen.... spun rod bearings are not a good thing....

Wrong..... you should shift when your horsepower peaks... its usually not the redline....
Also not necessarily true. For example. Say you have a car that redlines at 7K. And you shift at 6500, which is your HP peak, from second to third, third gear may be below the powerband it was designed for, for max acceleration. I would rather enter a higher gear (considering every gear you shift, acceleration slows) at a higher power band, thus I bring every gear up to redline (if you are doing some serious racing). [driving]

How did I do at explaining myself? I re-read that and not too sure if I did that well explaining it.. [screwy]
