since we're on this topic.........how come you cant go from "Manual" to "Sport", only
Manual to Drive
Drive to Sport
Drive to Sport to Manual
Sport to Manual
You can......following your logic of "Drive to Sport to Manual" being a valid way to get from Drive to Manual, a variation of this gets you there.

Manual to Drive to Sport.[:D] [:D] [:D]

P.S. Is that you in your avatar????? [:I]

Question: Why on earth would SPORT give better mileage if it spits out more REVs?[:0]

I don't know if you are kidding here or not, but if you are not, then I have to agree with Push on this one. GENERALLY SPEAKING there is no way you will get better mileage shifting at higher revs than lower revs.[8] [?|]

Read my previous posts. I can get better gas mileage with the "Sport Mode". Leave you foot out of the gas and watch the gas meter and keep the car in the correct gearing (in the powerband) and you can achieve better gas mileage. The main key is to not shift to 5th gear all the time. When in 5th gear and you depress the gas pedal the car will usually (most often) not be the best gearing (and will not shift down right away), therefore using more gas. The 5th gear in the “Sport Mode” is more like an overdrive gear. When most people are using the "Sport Mode" they are using it for sport reasons. They pay no attention to the gas meter and are usually driving aggressively in that mode. I have done a lot of testing with this and I can get better gas mileage in that mode. Try the sport mode and try to get better gas mileage by paying attention and not stomping the gas all the time. Just because you are in "Sport Mode" does not mean you are revving high all the time.

I agree.......I drive in Sport Mode 90% of the time and my gas mileage is 21.5 mpg........I have tried Drive for a week and the gas mileage is 21.9 mpg......I also fill up twice a week on gas, so there's many miles driven to achieve this average........... .4 isnt enough for me to be in Drive 90% of the time.......

Regarding if the Sport mode starts off in 1st or 2nd gear when taking off from a stop, on my
E46 323 Coupe it appears to take off in 1st gear; the way I determined this is to slowly apply acceleration from a stop (before it changes gear) and then to manually upshift, and to see what gear the car indicates it's in - on my 323 Coupe it indicates it is in 2nd gear, indicating that the gear prior to the upshift was 1st gear. At one stage it was indicating 3rd gear, so maybe it has changed the computer program as to what gear to start in.

Alternatively upshift manually to a higher gear eg 4, and then come to a stop and it will automatically change back to whatever gear it is going to take off in.
