Wow. The car is good looking in its own right, but the real rewards are in the features listed in the Press Release section. Us lowly 3-series buyers can now benefit from active steering, brake anticipation, valvetronic, and all the other BMW engineering firsts. Once again, no car in its class can touch it.

I want one.

I mentioned in another thread that I was lukewarm towards the exterior design. But after seeing new photos/videos, I must say the design is growing on my quickly.

I think the car looks way better in darker colors (like the navy blue or black/grey in some of the photos). I don't really care for the silver grey look. Funny, I never really gave so much thought as to how color can affect a cars appearance, but I think in this case it does.

I agree, the car looks much better in the darker colors. I happen to like the looks. It has grown on me as well. I know once I see it in person it will look even better. I am not as crazy with the interior though. The window controls need to be on the center console to be a true 3 series, IMO....

Exactly M Speed. The interior is not a 3 series at all. The window controls need to be in the middle. MBZ has done the same thing...kinda funny the only US built Benz...has the windows in the middle like the old German cars!!! Seems every new BMW has door mounted controls too. Maybe it is safer, and easier to use....but if you are used to them being in the middle....it sucks. Always trying to appeal to Japanese and American car buyers. Leave them alone, and focus on us loyal, freaky BMW obsessed folks!!

The interior is my only gripe. The dash materials look hard and "cost cutting", and the way the dash is so flat across....not even as sporty at the E46, E36...etc.

Really like the exterior though. Thankfully they did not rape and pillage our 3ers!!!

I don't know what you guys are talking about with the door window knobs. Don't you see the giant iDrive knob in the center? I'm sure you just push, turn, rotate, and click that 8 times and a window will come down somewhere.

LOL. Just kidding.

Actually, I agree the car looks much better in dark colors.

Now this is the sort of thing that gets me pissed off. Why do we need this driver-killing s***!? All it does is take away the feel of the car. Active steering? Brake by wire? I'm sorry, but i dont need a computer to tell the brakes how hard i want to stop! [:(!]

I'm totally with Chesty again.

My only big question is on some of the lines of the body pannels. I'm going to wait to see it in person and let's see if it grows on me (but you shouldn't need a design to necessarily grow on you, if it's truely beautiful it's love at first sight).

But I'm thinking maybe some of the lines are just too disjointed. Take the A pillar for example...what the heck is that? And I don't know where that line is going off the head lights either...it just disappears in the front wheel wells. That cutsey curl in the line of the bumper is holding on for dear life from the 7 and 5 (exact same line on the new Acura). I'm not saying the new 3 is butt uggggly like the new 5. Actually I think it's a great improvement. But I just think BMWs have always looked better with clean lines that flow from one end of the car to the other.

This new 3 really has a lot of the Z9 Gran Turismo concept car from 1999....check it out....but notice that the lines between body parts have all gone cutesy curly over the course of 5 years. They used to be straight and masculine.

You're damn right. We shouldn't have to look at a car and make up our minds whether or not we like it after a lot of deliberation. I've said it before and i'll say it again: take a look at the Aston Vanquish and tell me how long it takes to love the looks. Same with the E34 5er. The new BMWs are just too divisive and fussy in the style department - there was nothing wrong with strong, aggressive yet clean lines.

So you get a bunch of gadgets that you don't need or want and to top it off you have to pay thousands extra for them. On the other hand, BMW has always prided itself in being the first to market with new technology.

With respect to the 3 series design, it looks fine to me, at least in pictures. Now the 5 and 7 series are ugly cars in my opinion. When the 545 first came out, my BMW salesman gave me a call and told me it's time to trade up. Well, when I got to the dealership and looked at the 545, I didn't even bother to test drive it despite the urgings of my salesman. He said that if I drove it I would buy it, and that I would get use to the design. I told him that I didn't intend ever having to get use to the design of a car that costs $60K+.

Right on the spot!! I don't care if it is a $15,000 or $20,000 car...you should like it immediately. Maybe you have to get used to having/using extra features, or not having extra features...but the design attraction has to be there immediately.

With the new 5, 7 and somewhat for the 6...I have to keep looking at them from every angle, accessorized with awesome rims, or "Dinanized" to even get mildly excited about them. The new 3 isn't as controversial, but I remember when the E46 came out...I was drooling.

All I know is that a Titanium Silver 2003 540i with Sport Pkg, or a 2001-2004 M3 or 330ci/cic or even a 2000 740iL....is like an instant orgasm [;)] Not so for the new designs...the new 5, 6, 7, X3, Z4....sad!!!

I think that when it comes to new automobile styling, if you're not somewhat moved by the design (positively or negatively) then it's not that fresh or exciting and you've probably have seen 95% of the "new" design before. If you want to feel comfortably numb with an automobile design, join the masses who love their Camrys and Accords. You can bet on future generations to be as conservative as the current models.

I love the look of my E46 convertible, don't get me wrong, that's why I bought it. But in 2 years when the E90 convertible hits the streets, I'm sure I'll be itching for one. And I hope the 2 doors are a bit edgier than the 4 doors.
