collins8, the exact problem you are asking about is the subject of a BMW Service Information Bulletin. Take your car into a dealer, they will reprogram the EGS module.

I just bought a 2002 330I with 5K miles and I have following tranny problem. When I am coming to a stop the tranny will downshift right before you come to a complete stop. This downshift is very harsh and it will jerk your neck. Sometimes it will not do it, but 2/3 of the time it will. Has anyone else had this problem?? Should I take it back to the dealer and how will they repair this problem??

I'm laughing, I have the same problem periodically...........your description sounds a whole lot more sophisticated..........I described the problem to my dealership that it feels like someone keeps hitting my car from behind when I'm slowing to a stop sign..........[rofl] [rofl]

BTW, they told me this was normal due to the car being RWD..........[???1]

Has anyone tried this?

Has anyone tried using manual mode in the morning when the transmission is cold? Not sure on BMW, but I know that Ford and I believe GM uses higher line pressures when you use the gear shift lever to select gears. This is what is recommended when pulling a heavy boat up a ramp, to use "1" rather then "D".

This coupled with the post about them saying you take off too fast has me ROFLMAO@your dealership.

99.9% of the time my tranny is silky smooth. No jerking or any crap like that. Yours should be too. BTW that 0.1% is that 1 second delay on the first cold morning engagement......

Slip-tronic trans. blues

I purchased a 330i electric red sedan in december of 2003. The car has less then 1500 miles on it and has developed a huge problem. In the mornings when the engine is cold, the engine will rev when it it in drive and not go into gear. It takes quite a few seconds for it to engage into 'D'...usually 10 to 20 seconds The car will also jerk into 1st gear after it finally starts to drive. I have just taken my new BMW into the dealership for test on it and unbelievable to my ears.....i got a phone call from them saying the whole engine transmission has to be replaced...."there is some kind of flaw".....After reseaching on the internet and finding out that the bmw 3 series has many complaints about this same problem....not a happy camper.....hoping the new transmission works out.........

It is never recommended to allow a BMW to warm up without driving. Read your manual about "starting the engine"...just start and drive conservatively!!!

Hesitating for about a second doesn't sound that bad...... Positive thoughts, positive!!!!

ariper79, can you post the bulletin number for this? I like going in to see my SA armed with a printout from the TIS website (makes things easier). [thumb]

That's an old post that was during the "investigation" phase, a software patch alone is not the solution.

I personally have not validated the bulletin below, but others have posted it frequently on this board:

Yes, that's the correct bulletin. I went to the bmwtis.com web site and printed out the "offical" one when I went in to the dealer and handed it to the SA. That was probably overkill, I'm sure I could have just printed it out from here also, but I printed the offical one out on the color printer to make it "extra official"! [thumb]

It's not the entire engine and transmission that needs to be replaced, just the transmission. The engine is fine. Good luck with the new transmission! Mine has worked out fine for over 1000 miles now......

Absolutely correct. The engine does not need to be touched.

And ... by the way ... in spite of what the owner's manual says ... certain BMW service dept's have recommended a warmup in the morning for a few mins TEMPORARILY until the tranny is replaced.

If it hasn't happened by now, it probably wasn't affected... It is also possible that they did a tranny swap or other acceptable fix to remedy the problem by now. If you're car shifts without any slippage then you have nothing to worry about. You dug this one up from the grave, some really heated debates come to mind when thinking back on this issue.

D'oh, yeah I did dig this up from the grave..

Okay I haven't noticed anything yet, and my car will probably spend the bulk of winter inside, only to be driven when needed - about once a week.
