Wow, I'm really not sure if its a tough job. Hopefully someone will chime in that knows about this. If it was me , I would drop byglass shop and see what they say. A BMW dealer would be my last resort due to high labor costs..

Had this done under warranty when my car was a month old.

Was not happy about it breaking.

They had to take apart the whole sunroof to replace what look
like $0.50 clips.

It was covered under warranty, but I'd guess at least 2 hours
labor ($95 x 2) was required.

BMW should have used metal clips for this, not flimsy plastic.

To tell u the truth I would if I could just take if off.....Im just wondering if its possible just to slide it off without having to take other things apart up there...

yeah, those things and the window regulators (this cheap plastic part in there too) break constantly. SOmeone oughta start a class action against BMW on those two parts. That's NOT a frivolous suit.

My shade has broken twice -- second time out of warranty. The dealer quoted me $1850 to replace the entire thing. So now I just ignore the problem and deal with the shade sliding all the way back and forth when I'm driving.

I think we should start a class action suit for not only this dumb problem, but also the window regulators. My driver's side window is about to break for the thrid time and now that's out of warranty as well. I'd have to spend $450 on that repair.

What a rip!!!!!!!

Do that regulator yourself. The regulator is a $100 part.

Hate to sound like a girl, but I am a girl [hihi]. I don't have anyone around who's mechanically inclined. To be honest, I'm going to throw an absolute fit when (not if) this regulator breaks and demand that they stand behind their previous two repairs and deal with this known defect. Hopefully having an attorney for a boyfriend, he can help me put together a compelling argument (not to mention the fact that I saved a previous post from another person on this board who did throw a fit with his dealer over the same issue. He fought his dealer and finally got BMWNA to step in and fix the problem for free).

Thanks, though.

How did it break, while opening the shade with your hand, or
just by opening the sunroof window itself?

I think mine broke by simply opening the sunroof window, and not
any rough handling of the shade itself on my part.

That's what happened with mine -- both times. No rough handling, just normal wear and tear. In fact, I hardly use the stupid thing. I do remember small bits of rubber or plastic falling out from the sun roof and next thing you know, the shade's broken again.

My SA claimed it would be best to replace the entire thing -- shade, tracks, etc --and that's where the $1850 figure came into play. I looked at him like he was nuts and now deal with the broken shade.

I feel your pain. My shade was off the track when I bought the car. Had a hard time closing the shade - it'll get misaligned and get stuck. Brought it to the dealer and he said they'll try to replace the plastic clip WITHOUT taking the sunroof apart. But after leaving it at the dealer for a day, it couldn' be done and they had to order a sunroof replacement kit. They had to replace the WHOLE sunroof including the glass part. Here is what the invoive said:

Confirmed concern found sunroof frame broken replaced complete floating headliner

5412211 Removing and installing complete glass sunroof
1 54-13-7-134-541 FRAME
1 54-10-7-134-072 REP. KIT

Luckily, it was done under warranty and the SA said it'll be covered for the next 2 years. I imagine it'll easily be $2000 as the SA said it's a 4-5 hr job. If it was out of warranty I'll just live with it. Can't wait till it breaks again.

So its either I live with it or have to replace the whole kit....Thats ridiculous....Like I think Im just gonna break the shade into 2 pieces and live without it...
I dont have the cash to spend to replace that shit....lol
