Hi all,

I'm new to the board. My wife and I just bought a 2004 330ci with the 6 speed manual. Although my wife doesn't know how to drive a stick, I felt like the bimmer should have a stick instead of an automatic....so I'm teaching her. My question is whether or not any damage can be done to the engine from stalling the car. Luckily she is doing real well so she has only stalled it a few times.

Thanks.

It really takes A LOT of stalling out for you to hurt the car. You really shouldn't worry, a lot of people learn stick shift on their brand-new cars without a problem. Just make sure she doesn't grind the gears so much.

I taught myself. I refused to let my husband breath down my neck, cringe, yell, freak out while I was learning.

I cannot even get my wife to try and drive my car. She flatly refuses. I think she has become accustom to automatics even though this is the 7th manual we have had in the last 10 years, but her primary vehicle for the last five years has been automatic. She has driven all others but will not drive the BMW. [???1]

Don't tell my wife that this is possible. Of course I'm kidding. [:D]

Thanks everyone for the responses. I figured it would not hurt but theses cars are so sweet I wanted to double check. Glad to see so many others agree with my thoughts on a manual. SMG is another question all together. I don't know what we would have decided if it was available now.

Thanks again.

Just a thought, try going to a rural gravel road. Put the windows down (so she can hear the motor and wheels spinning.)

She'll learn quickly to match engine speed and torque required. And don't forget to show her hill holding. (later!) (but before she needs it)

I learned to drive manual on my mom's 1985 528e. I stalled alot when I was learning on that car, but never had problems with the car since. I ended up driving it from NY to CA for college, and still have it now. I even taught my then girlfriend (now wife) how to drive manual on it, she stalled alot on it too, and grinded the gears. It has over 180K miles and still drives great, never had any problems with the clutch.

So bottom line, BMW gears can take a beating with no probs. Good luck.

I guess one of the advantages of New York is we only need 1 car. We've had it 1 month and had to try and put 700 miles on it. It means getting what ever car we want to an extent but it means we're sharing it. I'm actually excited to see if she can learn to drive this car well. I want to take a BMW performance driving class and I would like to see her take one too. I don't mind being a passenger if she drives the way I like to drive. [burnout]
