My vote is for sirius, Clear Channel ownes stock in xm, howard stern makes the jump to sirius. In terms of functionality and sound, both are equal

Howard Stern needs to stop being on the radio and TV.
Is there a difference between the two providers? Is one cheaper than the other? I would just get whatever's cheaper.

XM went to a mostly comercial free format in January... the music is all comercial free...

BTW - I checked with BMW USA, and my dealer. I can get Sirius afterall as a BMW installed option. E46 with a manufacture date AFTER 9/03 and WITHOUT BMW Assist can get Sirius... of course I had BMW Assist (I removed it for Bluetooth)... so I'm expermienting a little... :)

SIRIUS had some deal where you pay 500.00 for life or something like thatl
The deal is $499.99 for the life of the specific satelite reciever. There's also a deal for ~$156 for 15 months... the break-even point for going annual vs. lifetime is about 4 years.

I have to ask myself will I have this car for 4 years (I don't imagine that I can move the Sirius reciever to a new car 4 years hence... even a new BMW)? Will Sirius be in business for 4 years?

I'm not trying to kill Sirius... in fact, I've decided to get it... but I also read the Sirius annual report (available on their web site)... they may not last as a company... and then the equipment is worthless... and lifetime service is meaningless.

well, as far as sirius being around for while, i have to think based on customer loyalty to the product that they will. As soon as they make the break even point of around 2 million subscribers, they will become profitable. I had the satelite radio in my old car before i got my 330 and when i had to go without commercial free radio for a few weeks, it was greatly missed. i also think that the technology is limitless. As far as broadcasting tv, and "live GPS" instead of the DVD. YOu would think i work for sirius, being such an advocate, but i believe in the technology and think it will be around for a long time. Sirius is great

I have had Sirius installed in my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse and it was one of the best purchases I have made. Nothing beats 60 commercial free music channels. The only problem was that I ran it through the FM Modulator so it comes in as the best FM station, but not CD quality.

However, in my 325i I was able to have the dealer install it so it will be CD quality and it was only $350. It normally was $500, but the dealer gave $150 off to cover the first year's subscription.

Is it just the head unit that matters? My question is... if i bought a headunit from a 3 series ('02 or newer? or is it '03 or newer??) and installed it into a 323ci, and paid the dealer for sirius installation, it would work, with cd quality, correct?

Well yes and no about the headunit. With the satelitte radio there are three parts, the headunit, the receiver (typically mounted in the trunk) and the antenna. With all three it is CD quality, otherwise if you go to BestBuy/Circuit City and get an aftermarket one they typically go through 88.7FM.

Another advantage with the BMW headunit is that you can control the satelitte radio on your steering wheel.

Since the '02 and '04 models are so similar I would imagine that you could buy '04 the kit from BMW (but I would highly recommend having the dealer do it).

I'm getting Sirius on my 04 330 cic that's on the way. My salesman said the radio unit (shape of the faceplate) is a little different than my 00 323, so before assuming that an 03 or 04 head unit will fit in an older car I'd recommend checking with a dealer to be certain.

He didn't say that BMW assist wouldn't work with Sirius, but I'll soon find out.

Glad to hear Clear Channel has something to do with XM, so Howard Stern will end up on Sirius when the FCC forces him off regular radio.

I have decided to go with my old after market XM kit with FM modulator. My local dealership wants close to $500 to install the sirius system into my 04' 325x when it comes in. As much as I would love to have steering wheel control, and an increase in sound quality, Im not sure if I can justify a $500 purchase when I already have working after market XM kit. Although it would be cool to also see the programming info on the factory display instead of peaking down at the sunglass compartment under the AC Unit. And lots not forget, never having to worry about turning off the XM first before clearly tuning in the local FM stations. See none of that really is worth $500 bucks.

(this is commentary merely meant to convince myself not to order the Sirius system...cuz lord knows I really want it bad...)

i chose Sirus, my dad has XM and its pretty cool, but i heard Sirus has more talk radio channels, and thats more than half the reason i ever use my radio. Sirus and an iPod would rock

So once I get my 05 325 I can have the dealer install the receiver and antenna and it will work with the stock head unit?

Where do they put the antenna? I won't have one of those shark fins on my car.

Ok, I just went to the Sirius web site where you can sign up for a free trial to listen to what they have. I've been listening for 20 minutes on "hard attack" the metal channel, and the dj yammers on and on and on and on and on and on between every song!!! The whole point of commercial free music is that the music is CONTINUOUS. It defeats the purpose to have to listen to the dj blaber for 15 mintues every hour.

On a side note, I went to the XM website also and saw the BMW adaptor kits. $299 plus intallation ($50 for tuner and antenna, $250 for adaptor). However, the aftermarket sony adaptors are $200 cheaper it looks like ($50 for tuner and antenna $50 for Sony adaptor). What's the deal?
