Hi, i'm new here and just wanted some advice. I have a 325i (2001) It's semi-auto. I was reading this whole thread about DSC on or off. Now i know when you turn it completely off (holding it down for 5 seconds) the car gains a performance increase. Now say my car does 7.1 0-60 with DSC off(completely) about how fast does it go now that DSC if off, From 0-60? maybe a second difference or half a second? Thanks for any replies.

YOu mean 7.1 with DSC off vs. DSC ON? Well, if you have Step, DSC off has generally been recorded as 8.1 seconds. On, likely half a second more since our engine can't wheel spin that easily anyways.

I will tell you DSC makes a big difference on slippery surfaces, I’ve ran it with it on and off and there is a big difference, with it off I couldn’t even control the car.

Can I ask two questions?

Why would anyone turn off the DSC unless they were on a track?

Would you undo your seatbelt if it gave you a couple of seconds in speed?

Maybe I just dont get the task a risk theory.[???1] [???1]

Street racing.

I'm just saying for the fact that BMW has included it in their vehicles it makes a difference; I couldn’t imagine not having the technology there with the difference it makes in driving.

Geeez guy's...its called having fun!!! I am sure the original query assumes right place right time 'n all ,. Stepping the back end out on a well balanced car in good conditions is just fun!!

Taking a GSXR 1000 up a 1/4 mile strip is simply something everyone should do just once...oh my... [:D]

OK, call me crazy..... but.....

how does turning DSC off give you any performance gains????

IT DOES NOT ! !

DSC is a computer that limits power to the wheels (via the brake) to give you stability control.

Applying or not-applying the brake does not count for any horsepower... sorry....

The only way you turning off DSC can help your 0-60 times is if you can avoid wheel-spin with it off, quicker than 31 times a second like the DSC can apply and release each individual brake. I know I can't. DSC also aids the rear of the car from coming around in a tight turn by applying brakes to the affected wheels that are losing traction, hence "dynamic" stability control.

Oh, one more thing (since I'm on a roll and making friends) holding the DSC button down for 3-5 seconds lights up the brake light in yellow indicating "brake assist" has been turned off... that means in a panic stop, you and your passengers will feel the full force (negative g's) of your braking action. Having the brake light off (with either DSC on or off) only helps divert some of the brakeing force so your passengers have a "smoother stop"...

My credentials? I discussed this for a long time with the factory rep in Munich because I did not understand the system until they took me for a test drive and talked me through it as they demostrated the differences for me...

Peace,
Krafty

Hey Krafty.....going on bmwboard.com and answering posts about dynamic stability control sure does sound like a strange thing to do when you're rolling. But I shouldn't really talk - I've done much stranger things [:D]

If you were to turn off DSC completely. And you wanna race from light to light and you hold brake and rev up to... maybe 3000? DSC off will give you that push in the beginning, however if its on then the tires will skid and the car will accelerate slower (trust me iv tried both)

now, i don't have any credentials..i've never even been in a car with DSC or ACB or ABC OR XYZ or any of these fancy whatever the hell they are. but it seems to me that if DSC LIMITS POWER TO THE WHEELS...i mean jebus lord. you just screwed your on credibility. i don't know what you meant but this is how it sounds to me, and probably "us." "why would taking power away slow you down?" sounds like an elementary physics class to me. perhaps i'm reading it wrong, in which case i apologize profusely. however, if i read it correctly [rofl]

Alright weighing in with my $.02 For me the DSC and traction control "hold onto" the car too long for SCCA Solo II. Yeah it's great to prevent the arse from coming about but when you get on immediately after letting up to gain traction it's still working. [?|]
So before all my runs now I turn them both off (DSC and Traction control) and am learning to control everything with the gray matter between the ears. [:D] That has been a lot of fun to feel it when it starts to slip, let up then get back into it!

The other wicked thing is turning it off for the 1/4 mile. When you stage up rev to about 2000 dump the clutch the arse end kicks slightly out to the left for about 30ft then gets back in line. two more gear shifts and your down the 1/4 @ 14.6 @ 94mph (stock by the way)[driving2] [burnout] [headbang] [rofl]

Like I said just my $.02

Aloha,
Ian

All magazines turn off traction control to get better 0-60 times. DSC will cut engine power and use brakes and whatever it needs to to prevent wheel slip. If you want the absolute best 0-60 time, you want a little bit of wheel slip.

However, turning off DSC isn't gonna chop a second off your 0-60 time. First of all, the 8.1 seconds is pretty much what a 325 steptronic will get with DSC off (ie, fastest you're gonna see). With it on, it's probably more like 8.3 or so. If you wanna see a 7.1 second 0-60 time, you'll need to do it with a stick shift and turn DSC off.

why waste the power of a bmw on an auto tranny?[?|]

i'll never understand...
Cuz some of us live in areas where the alleged freeways are more like parking lots. The car's not that slow really and when you consider the handling, I'll sacrifice the ability to go as fast as possible since there's too much traffic to do so anyways.

i live in seattle, don't get me wrong. we're ranked #2 for 5h!tty traffic (and i think #1 for suicide). in anycase, i always end up sitting in traffic. brake-clutch-gas-brake-clutch-gas. it happens, but it's so much more fun to drive. i know the 0-60 time's don't very all that much, and really, who races frequently? it just feels better to me. must my opinion.[wave]

Krafty,

I don't know why you were told the yellow brake light is "brake assist", and only affects how the passengers feel a full panic stop, but that is one the stupidest things I have ever read on this forum, and I have read some crazy stuff!
