speaking of abusing your car... i was 'flexing my cars muscles' and i accidentaly pulled my steptronic shifter into 2nd going 65 mph or so. the tach bounced off 6200 and came to 5800 rpm or so. i quickly went back to 3rd and proceeded to 5th. i decided maybe tonight wasnt such a good night to give my car a workout anyways. i dont think i did any damage or anything, but i certainly dont like to drive my car very hard. as long as you maintain your car (change oil regularly, check tire pressure, etc.) there really shouldnt be any negative effects to letting your car free on occasion, right?

Hardly, you didn't damage the car at all..... If it were too low a gear for your speed the computer wouldn't let you shift into 2nd.... so long as you didn't hit 6500-7000+ you're fine....

ya, bmw 325i is right. there's no way your computer would let you get away with that. furthermore, if you were driving a manual transmission and tried to shove it into second gear at 65 miles per hour, your sychros wouldn't allow it. it would make bad noises though. when i was still a stick n00b, i frequently put the car into 3rd from 4th. but i wasn't going any faster than 60, and 3rd handle's 60 like a pro. thank god for synchros though.

Yeah, I don't think any damage at all was done. Engines are such stable machines now that they have no problem with high revs. Almost every time I drive, I find myself taking my car into the higher rpm's (5K+) at least once...it's too much fun not to.

Sorry for digging up an old post but.... I am assuming that BMW changed the gearing over the years right? Because my 2nd gear is good till 71 @ redline (6600) [thumb]

Oh the 2000 rpm drop gives me the proper amount of wheel spin prior to hookup. It does seem kinda low though I'll try it out again soon and let you know might be 2500. [thumb]

ya, not only have they obvioulsy changed gear ratios, but i believe they have also increased the redline. mine is 6500 RPM and second gear really won't let you go much over 50. newer cars are obviously designed "better" and can handle higher speeds in lower gears at lower RPMs, for instance.

Krafty,

I don't know why you were told the yellow brake light is "brake assist", and only affects how the passengers feel a full panic stop, but that is one the stupidest things I have ever read on this forum, and I have read some crazy stuff!
This was explained to me by the gentleman who delivered the car to me at the factory. The same guy who explained to me how DSC works.

On a manual car, it's different. It will let you shift down if you want it to. Synchronizers aren't controlled electronically at all and its only function is to creat friction between the collar and the gear so that the dog teeth of the gear can be engaged smoothly to the collar. If your hear grinding when you're downshifting, it's probably because your synchros for the collar that matches that particular gear is going bad, causing the dog teeth on the gear to not match up correctly with the collar.

I've never downshifted passed redline, but I knew a guy (who is a complete idiot) that did downshift passed redline on his E36, blowing his motor- so that's proof it's possible.

Your E30 M3 looks very clean btw [thumb]

fine, yes, you can downshift causing a plus redline rev. but if you were to just shove it into gear without a hefty double-clutch, it just wouldn't happen. and if anyone's such a damn moron to rev past redline[8] [8] , i'm embarrased to own the same brand of car as he. also, i wish that were my E30 M3 in my sig. however, if you click that picture you'll see a pic of my engine-the M20 of my 325i.
