im pretty sure that the new 5 already has an adapter on the driver side door for hte iPod, not sure though, i have an iPod so if u could get it for E46 that would be awesome

i think teh difference is the new one will allow the users to acually go through the playlists and pick the song as currently i think u need to do that stuff on the iPod

I'll bet it'll start with the bread-and-butter 3 series... maybe the Z series too.

I'm the target market for this type of interface. I've got the AUX port in the glove box and love it. Unfortunately I need a host of other cables, etc. (power adapter in glove box, amplifier, wireless remote) to make it a seamless experience. Even then, I'm only skipping song by song and have no idea which song will play next, or what playlist has been selected (since the iPod is out of sight in the glove box).

I'm hoping this rumored solution will remove some of my glove box cable clutter _and_ display song data, etc. on my NAV system display without having to have goofy wires all over the place, and without having to "see" the iPod itself! Now that would be cool!

Anyone have any idea when this is supposed to be released?

Thats what im after! I have the aux input in the glove box and also use the flashlight addapter for power. I then ran the belkin car kit to the sunglass box below the climate control. So the unit does charge in the car, But I do have to open it up and look to navigate to what I want. A seamless controller would be ideal.

I don't have the aux input on my 2002 325I, is that part of the premium package or just an addition to the 2003 model year?
The AUX input is an optional install for a pre-wired feature. I don't know when they were first pre-wired, but I bet someone on here does......or check with your dealer to see if you are pre-wired.

I agree with bmwrocks.

If you open your trunk and look at the left side of the trunklid, you should see all the bmw options that your car is prewired for. My car has a couple of round, black plastic pieces and each one has a different accessory listed on it such as BMW phone, CD Changer, etc..

I believe that the AUX input is also one of the prewired options listed there. Unfortunately, I'm at work right now and can't check my car to verify this. Can anybody else verify?

I think you have to purchase the AUX input separately. I was quoted MSRP of $50 for the AUX input, without installation. Most people install it in their glove box. But if you look on this board, you will see many other clever places to install it. Seems like an easy install, but you do have to remove your headunit. Dealer will charge a few hundred for labor.

Just to clarify, it is the AUX input hardware that is purchased separately. That is the hardware that plugs into the plug behind the head unit on out to the mounting hardware and plug that most mount inside the glove box but you can mount in other places like JTravick says. Next post will use a longer run-on sentence if possible.

YEP!. BMWROCKS is right on about the hardware and pre-wire. My opinion is that since it is already pre-wired, and the related hardware is a relatively simple addition, BMW should have just did it all in the first place. It's kinda petty that they woudn't. I think someone else has stressed this opion on the board somewhere.

I know they should. But when my car was delivered the part wasnt available yet. SO I had to wait and then install it myself, which was simple and not worth paying to have installed.

It's suppose to be available now for the 3 Series, X3 and Z4. Although the advertisement says to go to ipodyourbmw.com the site isn't up yet. At least this is official. Here's the advertisement I have from Mobile PC magazine:

isn't an ipod a Mac? Are you guys Mac users or Windows users?
No. An iPod isn't a Mac. It's made by the same company that makes the Macintosh computers (Apple Computer). An iPod is a digital music player that has all but revolutionized the way people listen to their music. I read an article the other day that had some interesting statistics about the iPod:

1.] iPods represent 50% of the MP3 Player market. Basically one of every two MP3 players sold is an iPod

2.] iPods work with both Macintosh and Windows computers but the overwhelming majority of purchasers of iPod are actually Windows users. This one really surprised me, given the fact it's made by Apple. But, hey, I've got one and it's the coolest little device I've ever owned. Apple really knocked it out of the park when they invented the iPod.

ipods were originally only compatable w/ macs, but eventually they realized, that 90% of the computing world is windows based, and apple finally came up w/ a windows version, prolly last gen? can't remember, either way, now it doesn't matter

again the majority of ipod purchasers ought to be windows users due to market dominance. that said, as much as i like the ipods, i think they are about $100 over priced.. but then again what apple prod is not over priced? [:(]

OK... so... can I get a recap...

I have a 2003, 325i. How do I know if I have the prewire, and if so how do I get to it. One of these threads said I'd have to remove my head unit, and I'm sure there are one... maybe two people here who have done that before. Does anyone have instructions.

TheBry, what head unit do you have in your car?

What Belkin Car kit does anyone recommend? And where do I get the flashlight adapt for power?

Thanks guys, let's hope Steve Jobs comes up with something good.
