ipods were originally only compatable w/ macs, but eventually they realized, that 90% of the computing world is windows based, and apple finally came up w/ a windows version, prolly last gen? can't remember, either way, now it doesn't matter

again the majority of ipod purchasers ought to be windows users due to market dominance. that said, as much as i like the ipods, i think they are about $100 over priced.. but then again what apple prod is not over priced? [:(]

Yea, but look at it like this. Why do we buy BMW’s? A lot of people say they are overpriced. I think of Apple as the BMW of the computer world, more expensive but also higher performing, better performing, with a stronger quality product. Like a Chevy engine in a Cavalier (Windoze) and the engine in a BMW M5 (Apple)

Sure, the Chevy gets you where you need to go, but the BMW (Apple) does it with fine-tuned engineering.

Way to go Bry... I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't believe my BMW was overpriced... just like I don't believe the iPod is over priced. This is a clear case of "you get what you pay for." If you want a cheaper car, get a Chevy Cavalier (and be prepared for ho-hum boring experiences). If you want a cheaper digital audio player get a Dell DJ (and be prepared for ho-hum boring experiences -- and last year's technology). Great observation.

SUBSILVER -- you asked questions about my head unit, etc. I've got the BMW Navigation system (as depicted in my signature pic). Here's my iPod set-up:

1.] BMW AUX port in glove box
2.] BMW Glovebox Power Adapter
3.] Belkin Auto Kit for iPod with dock connector (3G iPod)
4.] Engineered Audio Wireless Remote for iPod (3G iPod)
5.] Male-to-Male stereo mini-plug

The AUX port was installed by the dealer -- he threw it in as part of my delivery package when I picked up the car. The part costs about $40 and installation can run from $150 - $250 depending on whether or not you have the NAV head unit.

I bought the glovebox power adapter from Bavarian Auto Sport but I think you can buy it directly from BMW as well. It converts the flashlight port in the glove box to a standard DC power port. If you want to get it from Bavarian Auto Sport, here's their URL:

http://www.bavauto.com./shop.asp

I got the Belkin Auto Kit for iPod directly from Belkin's website for $50. I've heard you can get them cheaper elsewhere. The cool thing about this kit is that the power port has a built-in amplifier, so you can amp-up the sound coming out of the iPod. The iPod's built-in headphone amp isn't strong enough to drive the speakers on my HK system in the car without being turned up all the way, which causes distortion. This adapter uses the iPod's "true" audio-out function (via bottom of the iPod). After connecting to the dock port on the bottom of the iPod, I simply connected one end of the stereo mini cable into the "audio out" plug on the Belkin power plug's amp port, and the other end into the female BMW AUX port (all within the glove box) -- now it works like a charm. Here's the Belkin part number: F8V7058-APL

I ordered the wireles remote (actually named RemoteRemote) from Engineered Audio's website for $40. This is a cool device. It comes in two pieces -- a receiver dongle and a remote. The dongle plugs into the iPod's headphone jack. Here's the URL:

http://www.engineeredaudio.com/products/remote.html

So, the BMW Power adapter is connected to the flashlight port, and the Belkin power adapter is attached to the other end. The two-ended mini-jack is plugged into the BMW AUX port and into the Belkin power adapter's AMP port; the Belkin power adapter is connected to the iPod's dock port; the Remote dongle is plugged into the iPod's headphone jack. All of that lives in my glove box -- I have an iPod I use exclusively in the car, so I rarely take it out (except to add new music). The remote lives in my ashtray. Whenever I want to switch songs, I simply pop open the ash tray and hit a remote button to go forward / backward or pause my playlist. This is a great solution because I didn't have to run a wire through my dash. The wireless remote is fantastic.

One final cool feature is that whenver the BMW Alarm is activated, all power is switched off. When the power is cut, the iPod goes into sleep mode. So when I deactivate the alarm and start the car, all I have to do is hit the pause button on the remote and it will start the iPod, picking up right where I left off in the song that was playing.

All of this sounds complicated (I probably made it more complicated than I needed to in this description) but it's really easy to put together.

Let me know if you have other questions.

So your Ipod stays in the glove box? I ran my Belkin cable from the glove box to the tray under my climate control. Fins put the Aux cable there, but I ran the Belkin to it so I have a handy place within arms reach to minipulate the Ipod. And you are right about the Belkin charger being great, I never need to charge the Ipod since it always gets power I just grab it when I goto the gym and what not and plug it back in the car to charge.

After reading about IpodyourBmw, I dont know that it has any real advantages over my current set up.

TheBry... dang man... I mean... talk about coming through with some good info! Thanks!!!
LooNTooNs, I'm hoping that the major advantage will be a digital readout of the songs being played. Not sure how it will work with playlists, and the controls on the steering wheel, but i guess if the option to have a wireless remote is out there, then that's another way to go.

Here's the news link

Here's Apple's product page

Here's Apple's ad clip

Too bad I own a 2000 model, no go for me except going FM.

But even with this iPod interface, it seems you can only see "Tr 01", "Tr 02"...etc instead of actual song titles and artist names.

I just wish somebody comes up with a wireless RF modulator that transmits these info via the RDS channel so even my 2000 323ci would be able to display them.

As far as I know, even though there is this adapter for the iPod as well as one for a MP3 CD changer, none of them are able to display MP3 track info - other than going satellite (Sirius or XM).

The new BMW iPod solution won't work in my convertible because I have the BMW Navigation system. So, looks like my little set-up will have to suffice. It's not such a pain to use the wireless remote to switch between songs. My soluton is actually a lot like the one just announced, with two exceptions: 1.] I have a few extra cables in the glove box; 2.] I can't switch tracks using the up/down arrows on the steering wheel (I have to use the wireless remote in my glove box). Still, I like my solution because the iPod is out of sight and there is no tell-tale stereo mini-jack wire dangling from my dash to tip off potential thieves that there's a loose MP3 device in my car.

If BMW makes the Apple solution available to cars with NAV, I'll definitely go for it so I can ditch the wireless remote (reclaiming my ash tray for other use) and get rid of a few cables in the glove box.

I agree. I went to BMW yesterday and started asking them about the iPOD. First off the sales guy didn't know anything about it. He tried to sell me the audio cord, and then I had to explain to him what I was talking about. With a blank look on his face, he said, "Let's go talk to parts".
When we got there, the parts guy had a stack of "Please call back" notes for people interested in the iPOD feature. He didn't have any info for me, so I just asked him to call me when he got in. I agree LoonTooNs... if it doesn't do a track, then I'm going to save my money and get creative with a setup of my own.

From the look of the comercial, It looks as if you just plug the Ipod into a cable (looks like the belkin adapter I have), then just "toss" your Ipod into your glove box(dont want it rolling around in there).

Now if the part hooks up to the AUX port on the back of the head unit and can power the unit, all with one cable, then this is a improvment and may be a better option for IPOD owners who have yet to get the AUX cable. I wounder if you can reroute the wire to diffrent areas (I like my position).

If it did power the unit and was only 1 wire and I can route it where I wanted it, and if it wasnt much more then the combined parts im using, it makes a good solution. Even if you dont see the track name. It sounds like they heard what we were doing and made a product to accomplish this.

wow was that a run on post or what!!!

edit: Looks like ipodyourbmw.com is live

It seams to act like a 6 disk changer. But its a pretty wear intergration if you ask me. Part of the display issues could be getting the track info out of the IPOD. and installed looks to be a little to highly priced.

of course it's highly priced... BMW and Apple... it's a given.
Does anyone know of a thread on here that explains how to install the AUX cord? maybe it's close to the same thing for this and we can do it on our own!

Sub, there are a few DIY's hanging around. I installed my AUX into my glovebox the day I brought my CiC home from the dealer. The install was simple. Took me about 45 min. Just make sure you tape up whatever you use to remove the trim.

I don't recomend ANY FM transmitter type for IPOD, like the iTRIP. Does not work well at all, lots of static and not very user friendly in my opinion. Didn't even work well in my hotel room right next to the clock radio -- very disappointed, only used it 2x. I think any device that gives you direct input to your sound system, (via miniplug, rca, aux input, etc.) will be your best bet. I would love to IPOD my BMW but not sure if I can since I am using the cd changer harness in the trunk to feed my XM radio. I don't think I have any more available inputs now.

I use the FM transmitter with the IPOD and it works great. In different cities I just change to one of the empty channels. I don't have the Itrip. Monster cables is the brand name.

Yeah, so... I broke down and bought the iPOD. The new one, 4th generation or something along the line. Totally happy with it.
Going to be getting the integration part soon, here's my questions:
Does anyone know if it HAS to go in the glove compartment? I kind of have a problem putting a $300 toy in a glove compartment where it can move around.
Does anyone know of a link to buy an iPOD holder that attaches to the interior?

thanks
