Motorola V710 Bluetooth Hack
RUSSELL BEATTIE -- If you need a hack to enable Bluetooth on the Motorola V710, you can wade through the bitchfest on Russ Beattie's blog or go directly to the hack. People on Howard Forums are talking about the files in the Verizon forum at http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=485087. You need to use your head to find the files. It means going to the web addresses that people linked to for certain files.

Here is the guts of the V710 Bluetooth Hack, with the warning "do it at your own risk." You need to ensure the phone is unplugged from the computer before commencing. This hack requires Windows XP drivers to work correctly.

What you need:

USB to Motorola phone data cable that is compatible with the v710. This is on eBay for less than $20. The future dial cable is not good enough.
Windows XP -PST 7.11 and the activation disabler (PST_uni_patch.exe)
Superdave's firmware.
Here are the basics of the V710 hack, thanks to superdave, howardforms, and those hosting the requisite files:

Install PST 7.11. Let it install all the updates for XP.
Reboot.
Copy PST_uni_patch.exe to C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST and then run it. Make sure it was successfull with all six operations. Then click finish.
Turn on phone and plug it into the USB cable. Windows should detect it. Point the Driver search wizard to C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST It should now find the drivers and install the phone as Motorola USB Modem.
On the start menu in the Motorola PST folder, run the "Flash & Test Commands" program.
Windows will now redetect your phone as a USB Composite device, and begin asking for drivers. Again, point it to C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST. It should do this a few times to install all the drivers it needs.
In the Flash & Test program, it should show your phone in the Devices section. If not, try exiting and then opening the Flash & Test command program again.
If the phone is in the devices section, click browse to select the firmware from superdave. Click the flash button.
This process will take a few minutes, so don't mess with the phone or program. Wait until it says the flash has completed. Once it compeltes, check the "errors" section for any problems.
The phone will probably reboot at this point, but just power it off again. Pull out the battery for 60 seconds. Then plug it back in.
Your phone will shows a "No Service" message but that is not a problem. Type *228 and the dial button (green button). It should then call up your service probider through an automated activation service. Choose option 1 so it programs the phone automatically. Wait until it says it is done with the process before powering off the phone.
You should be done now!

V710 ( V710ws8700_01.40R ) Thumbs up

Hi All.
Got Jan 2005 BMW magazine, it says ALL 2005 3 series with Premium package and/or BMWassist have Bluetooth, (my car 2005 325XI Premium package, cold weather package, auto transmission). Called BMWNA with my VIN, they said I am good to go. Called my sales rep, he confirmed. Checked BMWUSA web, confirmed. Bought a Motorola V710 updated with the required software (V710ws8700_01.40R). Tried to pair the phone,.... nothing.
Called BMWNA for explanation, they confirmed I should have it and should take it with my service department. Called Service Department, they checked the VIN and said build date was 08/04, cut off date was 09/04, they also said BMW website is wrong. I said I purchased a model year, not a build date, my car should include everything BMWNA says I should have. I was also concerned about my 15 days allowance to return the phone and cancel the contract with Verizon as I read all the negative stuff about the phone, I really don't want to have to change providers since I travel a lot and Verizon's coverage is better then most other phone companies. Here is where my story turns in the right direction: [bmwdance] the service rep agreed with me and said not to worry about the phone, he has the same one and thinks it's great. He also told me not to worry about the BT as they will figure out a way to make it right. Three or four days later he told me he'd have my parts on Monday, when can I bring in the car? Got a loner from the dealership, 2 days later I had Bluetooth in my car [bmwdance] . They even washed my car. Grand total: $0.00 They also gave me ZERO hard time, I have to applaud the Dealership and BMWNA: dealer paid for labor, BMW for parts. They all handled it very well. Was painless for me, except for my concern about the phone.
Now for the phone report: Paired instantly, loaded the phonebook in about 15-20 minutes. Connects to the car almost instantaneously as I turn the key. Works great as advertised and, maybe better [clap] . I even tried to walk away from the car to see how far it will stay connected. At about 50 to 60 feet it was still going strong, when I turned the corner around my building the phone "said" that the BT signal was week, did I want to use the handset? There is a feature in my car that if a call is in progress and you turn the ignition key off, the BT, the speakers and the whole setup is still on until you finish the conversation. Sounds good, but the problem is that if you want to continue talking and walk away from the car, you can't continue talking since the mic and the speakers are still in the car [8] . Go to menu and drop the BT by selecting "use handset".
Overall I am very happy with the whole thing and wanted to share it with you, the V710 fortunately works great. [clap]
At the risk of doing you all a disservice: please don't ask me which dealership I used. This is politically sensitive issue for BMW, I definitely don't represent their interest, but when I asked the rep if he minds if I share the name with the board, he said he'd rather I did not. He made it very easy for me and I choose to respect his request. I hope some of the information is useful for you as you take it with your service department on a one by one basis.
Take care. [doorpeek]

To anyone still interested, depending what part # of the ULF you have installed in your car, the V710 with the new firmware (40.0R). If you have the newest ULF ending with the number 387 everything should be good. I have the older 552 ULF and the new firmware doesn't work at all with it. I'm trying to find a dealership to buy the newest 387 ULF so everything can work. :(

A lot of us have just done the work ourselves. Read the posts in this thread:

http://www.bmwboard.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9499&page=2&pp=25

There are three of us that have completed the DIY job. Two of us have convertibles with BMW Assist. The reason why the dealer doesn't support the configuration is, in my opinion, because you have to choose either BlueTooth or BMW Assist -- the two don't co-exist because they use the same wiring, mic, etc. Since I had no intention of renewing my subscription to BMW Assist, I didn't have a second thought about ditching the BMW Assist module and replacing it with the BlueTooth ULF module. I started with the Sony Ericsson T616 phone, and it worked fine with the BlueTooth system. Now I've upgraded to the Motorola RAZR phone and it works even better with the Address Book feature, etc. All phonebook, caller ID and outgoing call info is displayed on my BMW Navigation screen. Quite nice.

Bry:

Got my BT kit the other day and am having a friend help me install it soon. [bmwdance] He mentioned something about reprogramming after. Did you disconnect the battery during the install?? Was any kind of reprogramming needed??

Hey man,

It's recommended that you disconnect the battery, but I didn't bother. No re-programming was necessary after the install. The unit I bought was one of the older ULF modules (manufactured in 2003 I believe). I just bought a new-ish one off of e-Bay and will be swapping my old one out for the new one -- hopefully this weekend. I'm having some phone directory and SMS issues that I'm hoping the newer ULF will rectify.

Let me know how your install goes and, more importantly, how having this technology has changed your life! Mine sure has changed for the better.

I have the HS850 BT headset that works pretty well, so I don't have to hold my phone now. The voice dial works pretty well on it, usually within 1-2 tries.

Looking forward to using the steering wheel buttons to dial, not having the earpiece and integrating with the sound system.

I don't have nav, but just curious: Can you find a restaurant in the nav system and have it call the number with a voice command? My friend's Acura RL system does that.

Predicting 70 deg tomorrow!! [clap] Could be top down! BTW, had to bring the car in for a squeak that ended up being the top--they had to re-lube it.

I just ordered the bluetooth module kit and all.
It costs me $575. I include the jumper since I don't know if I already have it, or not.
I am keeping my fingers cross during install. It seems not complicated.

Any advice for installation?
