I have the HS850 BT headset that works pretty well, so I don't have to hold my phone now. The voice dial works pretty well on it, usually within 1-2 tries.

Looking forward to using the steering wheel buttons to dial, not having the earpiece and integrating with the sound system.

I don't have nav, but just curious: Can you find a restaurant in the nav system and have it call the number with a voice command? My friend's Acura RL system does that.

Predicting 70 deg tomorrow!! [clap] Could be top down! BTW, had to bring the car in for a squeak that ended up being the top--they had to re-lube it.
I've been thinking about getting a headset for use around the house. I have the RAZR phone which supports 100meter bluetooth... which means I can use a headset up to 300 feet away from my phone (potentially).

Regarding the NAV and restaurant dialing, the voice feature will activate the navigation and locate a restaurant either at your present location or at the destination (if you're using the guidance feature to get where you're going). Once the system finds the number it won't dial it without some physical intervention by you (the Acura implementation is better). However, I've got a workaround that I use. Once the guidance system finds and displays the restaurant, I tell the system to dial the number. So the interaction goes something like this:

Bry: [presses "talk" button on steering wheel then says...] "Restaurant at destination"

System: [locates restaurant list and displays alphabetically or by category on Nav display]

Bry: [turns dial to select desired restaurant... address and phone number are displayed... then Bry presses "talk" button again and says...] "Dial Number"

System: "Please speak the number"

Bry: [reads the number from the Nav display...] "415-555-1212"

System: "415-555-1212... continue?"

Bry: "Dial"

System: "Dialing"

It works pretty well. The tough part is choosing a restaurant from the long list of possibilities at the destination. ;-)

Refer to the guidance in the above thread. Let us know if you have any questions -- happy to help.
I just received the bluetooth hardwares. I have read the installation instructions and Adam's DIY instructions from http://www.golilm.com/DIY/Bluetooth/.

Here are my initial qeustions:
1. In Adam's DIY instructions, he went over the procedure of opening the center console which is not documented in the installation instructions. IF I don't really want to cut out the center console for paring button (just like you), do I need to go through the procedure? Or, I still need to open the center console to get to the wiring?

2. Adam's said that if I don't unplug the pin 7 & 8, the bluetooth will still work, but my speedomeeter wouldn't. My experience is that speedometer is a mechanical. Is this differnt with BMW?

3. The installation Instructions went over with very limited explaination with SES jumper (one picture), and Adam's instruction didn't mention anything about it. Not that I already knew that I need one or not, where and when do I install the jumper? (BTW, they forget to send out the SES jumper, so it will come a few days later).

4. Adam's instruction went over switching the microphone location with the moonroof switch. He also mentioned that the opening for moonroof switch is slightly larger than the microphone opening. Will there be hearing problem for the person on the other end of the phone if I leave the microphone location as it is?

Wow... lots of questions :)

1.] You'll need to open the center console to get to the wiring, and to install the bluetooth antenna and pairing button. This (in my opinion) was the most nerve-wracking part of the installation. I was so worried I'd crack something. It's easier than it looks though. You'll be fine.

2.] I believe the spedo is electromechanical

3.] Yeah, I thought the same thing. I was worried about it, but it turned out I was fortunate and got to skip that part of the install. When I did the install I discovered I didn't need to do anything with the jumpers. You should check yours first.

4.] You're on your own here -- I've got a convertible and it was pre-wired with BMW Assist (which included the microphone and wiring to the trunk mounted ULF). Seems strange you'd have to move the mic though. Maybe he did that to avoid wind noise when the moon roof is open? My mic is fine and I've used it with my convertible top open. I'm told by people I've phoned that there's a bit of wind noise but other than that I'm completely audible/understandable when I speak while driving.

Let me know if you need help with anything else. It can look a bit daunting, but it really is easier than it looks.

Thanks TheBry!

The installation was a success!!! Everything seems to work properly.
It turns out that I don't need the jumper after all.

I have some questions again.
1. I am having a hard time to 'store name'. Particularly, names with number that has '0'.
I tried to repeat the process many times, but it seems that system doesn't get number correctly. Do you experience the same problem? Is there a way to just type in the number?

2. Is there a way to create 'store name' given a dialed number? In other words, do I need to say the number again?

3. I have the 'R/T' button and a button with talking head on my wheel. Thus far, I am able to do everything talking head button (pickup phone if a call comes in, call someone with voice activated, scroll down my phone book, etc.) When is the 'R/T' used?

THanks again!

No worries about the questions. This stuff isn't documented very well by BMW. Probably because it isn't truly supposed to be a DIY job.

1.] You've got to speak very clearly, and I find if you use the word "zero" instead of "oh" for "0" you'll have better results. Have you tried saying "zero"?

2.] Yes... you've got to recite the number again. Once you've dialed a number, it's not retained in the voice system's memory... only in the "last dialed" function of your phone and the "top 8" function of the ULF (unrelated to voice dialing).

3.] The R/T button is used to switch between radio and telephone functions. I've found that if I press the R/T button while the radio (cd, etc.) is playing, the system will automatically dial the last number called without the need to invoke the voice command.

Hope this helps. I think Bluetooth is the coolest thing I've ever installed in my car. Being able to answer and make calls without fumbling with my phone while driving is not only safer, but it's way more convenient and far less stressful. I love it.

Yes, I have tried both 'zero' and 'oh', and it ends with same result. However, I notice that not all numbers have the problem.

Is there a way to just type in the numbers?

So, there are 2 diffeent phone books. The cell's phone book and the bluetooth phone book. Is there away to browse the bluetooth phone book to avoid duplicate store names with the same number? What happens if I forget exactly how I named a number? For example, I stored a number called 'home', but then I forget what the call name is. Then, my automatic reaction would be creating another stored name number ('my home'). It means I have 2 stored names with the same numbers.

Thanks again!

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to type the numbers and assign them a voice-dialing name. I'm wondering why you're having trouble with this -- mine works fine. In fact, I'm amazed at how accurate it is. I don't even pause between numbers, I just rattle them all off, and the voice recites them back exactly. Strange, eh?

Yes, there are two different phone books -- one in your phone (which can be displayed on your Nav screen if you have navigation... or on your radio -- I think -- if you don't have Nav). The only way to get a list of what you've already stored is to ask the system to "read phonebook". Press the "talk" button on your steering wheel and say "read phonebook". Your voice-dialed names will all be read back to you.

According to its manual, the system should pick up an incoming call by push down (1 to 2 seconds) the 'talking head' button. I have done this many times, but it won't pickup the phone. I have to pick up the incoming call through the phone, then the system would pick up the conversation.

Am I missing something? or did I do something wrong?

Hi,

I've been following the posts about Moto V710/Verizon/Bluetooth/BMW ULF for a long time now. I would love to have BT in my 2004 325xi but need to stick with Verizon. I've heard that the V710 works ok if you get the latest firmware and a certain version of the ULF. Can any V710/Verizon users confirm this?

I've seen that the newer 2005s have a dual Assist and BT box which is supposed to work better with the V710 while obviously keeping the Assist intact. Does anyone know if this works in a 2004 with Assist?

This is where I've gotten my info:
http://www.x5world.com/html.php?file=bmw_bt_phones.htm

Thanks!
