andre: 15 or 16 is really low. on top of the city driving, what is your driving style? if you take it easy most of the time, and gun it once in a while, your milage should be much higher, but if you live in the high rpm range...

but this does sound like a really simple question, so i'll stop. either way, i dun think you need to take it to the dealer for lower than usual gas milage.

and aren't you canadian? wth you doing talking in miles and gallons? or you are just doing that for "our" sake? [:p]

My driving style is usually to go fast. The pedal hits the floor often. Having said that, I have tried being really easy on it without much help. The other day I went on a reasonably long drive, much of it highway. I was trying as hard as I could to conserve gas for 80% of the time. I managed 19.4 mpg. Better, but still not great.

Yes, I'm Canadian. I post in mpg since most people are talking that language - I assume there are more US posters here than others. Most people here still talk mpg but our gallon is larger.
When I say 16 mpg I mean US. That is about 19 mpg Canadian, or in metric-speak 14.6 liters/100 KM.

You guys should also take into account that every car is different. And I don't mean 325i vs 330i. But I mean, one 330i will get better or worse gas mileage than another 330i, even under the same exact driving style. The engines don't run identical to the next, and some engines produce more power than others...that's why the city/highway mileage is all "estimated". [;)]

It is more complex than that--When the sample cars are tested by the EPA part of the test is to determine fuel usage. What they do is measure the amount of carbon compounds exhausted out the tail pipe during the test. The carbon emissions include CO2 and unburned fuel. The test is done on a dyno with the driver following a speed profile displayed on a computer. The full test takes several hours. From the numbers collected the MPG is calculated.

'03 330i 6-spd/ZHP -- 22.8mpg (avg); that is suburban driving (60% hwy, no stop and go). Have seen as low as 15mpg (below freezing temp/short trip); or 12mpg (driving school at Mid-Ohio!). Best is just under 28mpg all highway, avg. 72mph. Car has 7k miles. Wen not on the track, I'd say my driving style is moderate.

'01 Honda Odyssey -- avg 15mp (lots of short trips); and 22mpg (hwy).

'00 Maxima SE 5-spd -- 21 to 24 mpg (suburban); 28mpg highway only (averaging 75-82mph)

If you do short trips and have a heavy foot, I's say 15-16mpg is to be expected.

Really, they actually do all that? I thought the gas mileage is all calculated by equations...weight of the car, engine size and operation, transmission, and all these other factors and they just give you the "EPA Estimates" for that car, lol. I didn't know they actually dyno the car and stuff.
As an update, I haven't been doing much highway driving for this break and now my average fuel economy is exactly 16mpg. My driving style has no hesitations...I mean, I don't drive like a maniac, but I don't think about best possible fuel economy, either. I just drive for what's comfortable for me and when I feel like taking the car to redline (about a couple of times every day), I don't hesitate. The result of my driving style has been 16mpg...this is like SUV-style, heh. Oh well, the gas is worth every penny. [:D]
