Like it or not -- after about 100 - 110 your speedo starts to loose accuracy on normal cars.

The reason it gets up above the limiter is becuase the limiter is hooked up to the engine, not the speedo.

The 'speed limiter' is actually the rev limiter. It just so happens that the rev limiter hits when the car is moving about 128mph.

not necessarily. a 540 runs the 155 way below the rev limiter. with smaller hp it can easily happen that the gearbox is set to meet both at the same or similar time. but generaly the speed limiter is a single unit.

I agree, it even says on BMW's website that the standard 3 series is electronically limited to 128 mph and the ZHP is limited to 155 mph. Sorry guys, unless you have a chip in your car to remove the governor, there's no way you're gonna exceed 128 mph. (US models)

Here's the link to the tech data:

And here's the link to a pdf file that goes into more detail:

I contest that... I saw 134 on the speedo, I think theres a way to trick the governor. One thing I noticed is when I hit that top speed it was (slightly) downhill maybe that explains why it didnt grab it. Maybe on a level road or slightly uphill it doesn't exceed 120-128, but downhill unless the car has a brake engage feature, (which it doesn't) I'm sure it can run up into the 140's. Especially considering the amount of power needed to sustain 128 either level or slighlty uphill doesn't neccessarily get counterbalanced by the drag of 12 extra mph.[burnout]

There is a way to trick the governor.....You have to replace the engine software (chip). Without the governor any 3 series bimmer will easily hit 150+ mph. Unfortunately, BMW electronically limits the top speed of the 3 series to 128 mph which means that once you hit 128 the computer will cut off the throttle making it impossible to go over that speed. You're right, on a downhill you probably would be able to exceed the 128 limit but I doubt you could hit 140. Just my 2 cents.

I'll revist this when I attempt it myself... [;)]

1 mile = 1.209 km

that means that 250km / 1.609 = 155miles

sorry dude, but somehow you got your math wrong...
touche. i don't know why i was thinking 1.8 km to the mile. Yours has a little typo though. it's 1.609 km = 1 mile. Your math was better than mine though.

speedo im my 325 reads some more 150 miles. as hte gear ratio limits topspeed to 240 kph = 150 mph, that is really the best I could go. some more revs and the limiter would have jumped in.
btw, i am impressed how accurate the speedo really is in my car. very precise even at that high speed.

ok guys the limit on 2004 bmw 325's (US SPEC) is at 134-135mph. The limit on pre-2004 e46 325's was 128mph. And the 330's are limited to 155mph.
As a side note I drive my car everyday on the autobahn and as long as there is no traffic in my way I will cruise at 135mph. It feels no different than if I were going 60mph.

German versions may differ: The 330 has a limiter on it and won't go "to 155" without some type of mod...

I envy you for not having to worry about cops on some of your roads...ahh the autobahn. You drive on it everyday, we dream about as we sit in traffic.....
What RPM are you at drving 135 in your 325??

The limit on the 330 is for the US SPEC. Not German SPEC. Now it is possible different since you order your from the States, Where as I order mine here in German, but to my understanding US SPEC is US SPEC no matter where you get it from. [burnout]

Sorry? any bimmer as in really any bimmer??? there is no way a 320 will make 150 miles an hour.
Your engine may not be able to get you there, but your car would hum at that speed.

Pretty much any of the software upgrades out there also remove the top speed limiter, so your true top speed is riding on how strong your engine is, and how much wind resistance you can push through (bigger the engine, the faster you'll go).
