**DO NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS THAN HAVING A TRANSMISSION TRANSPLANT**
The very foundation of your argument - transmission replacement - is based on what worked for me and others! But then you should know from first hand experience, working through the problem yourself, right?

Oh that's right, you've never even owned a car with the Sliptronic problem - yet you speak with pompous, arrogant, self righteous authority!!! [rofl] [rofl] [rofl] You are too funny!!!

By the way, did you ever own a Candy Apple Red 7 Series?

[???1] All of the transmission threads are completely bloated with this bunk, it takes an hour for a new member to get to the bottom of the issue......... STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!

Come on Tom, Car_54 was merely adding some humor. Not at all fair to single him out. His posts have been honest and accurate.

i've spoken to kirby, please guys keep the threads on topic, b/c it IS tough for a new bmw user to come to our board and see all this stuff.

as far as the dealer not helping you out, you are being too nice, too understanding with
them. it is thier job to fix any problem. u have a waranty, make full use of it.

my father has a ML55 AMG and we had the dealer replace the enitre rack and pinion system because they couldn't get it right the first time.

so be persistent, and if the dealer is not ging to work with you, then find another dealer.
they WILL do the work, but they will also try to get out of it as well.

It's ok to add humor to the forum just as long as it isn't directed at other members causing them to feel uncomfortable. Since this is a message board it's hard to know when a member is kidding or being serious and as a result this can easily escalate into something more than just a joke.

Summary and Let's Move Forward!

Folks,

We seem to have a major disagreement here. One side believes that because the BMW TSB specifically mentions a tranny replacement, this excludes the legitimacy of a clutch pack replacement also being a corrective fix for the problem. The other side believes that since there have been some owners who have had the clutch pack replacement done with success ... and because at least one person knows and has spoken to a BMW tech who endorses this ... and because others have spoken to BMW SAs who have endorsed the clutch pack as an alternative solution ... that the clutch pack replacement is an alternate solution.

This basically summarizes our dilemma. Both sides believe they are right. My suggestion is that we all move forward by:

1. Elimination of any rhetoric or name calling.
2. Treatment of one side by the other respectfully ... this means to express the way one feels about the "other side's" view as another opinion ("Larry E. feels that" or "Car_54 feels that"). This legitimizes the other side's view as an opinion.
3. Expressing facts and only facts on this board.

So the content of the TSB is a fact. The conversation held with a BMW Tech or with one's SA is a fact. The actual experience that one has had with the replacement tranny or clutch pack and whether it has successfully resolved the problem or not is a fact.

Name calling is not a fact. To say that a repair option is "faulty" with nothing to back it up is not a fact. To say that the recommendation in the TSB is the only BMW-sanctioned repair for this problem (unless there are some facts to back it up) is speculation. To say that Car_54 is wrong about this "speculation" is not a fact either ... as he believes this to be true because the TSB doesn't mention any other options. To say that someone has reason to believe that there are other repair options because they have been told so by BMW is factual enough to express ... with the understanding that there appears to be a gap between what is stated in the TSB and what others have been told.

Bottom line, we need to try to find a way to legitimize each others opinions, and find a way to express when we disagree in a respectful manner ... backing out opinion up with facts whenever possible.

So ... let's move forward and try to help the people who read this board!

[:0] Woah........ Congratulations on the successful highjack of my thread[clap] [clap] [fake]

*Btw today it was 55 out and the transmission didn't slip, neither did the climate controls act up, the a/c was on...

The two times it slipped were >40 temperatures, but the handbrake and whistling-powerup tranny sound remains. Anyone know what causes the transmission sound??? I hear it on overabused taxi's everyday in NYC.

A whine-like tranny sound that increases with vehicle speed and then quits upon a gear change is usually a noise that comes from the planetary gear set. My Camaro makes this type of whine in first gear - most older-design domestic automatics do make this type of noise and it is normal for those cars. Late model Caprice and Crown Vic taxi cabs just use overdrive and electronic versions of essentially the same automatics that were introduced back in the 60s. However, it certainly isn't normal in a new BMW - something is clearly wrong.

Just to cover all bases, it isn't the power steering pump making the noise, is it? A lot of times power steering pumps that are having problems or are being starved of fluid can make this kind of noise too.

My last word. I'll go to my appointment. I will accept the "fix" they offer. I will get details. I will post what they did. I will report how the car runs after the fix. I will then shut up [fake]

No offense taken larry, what I really meant was the "mother in law" and the "Liver transplant" comments/comparisons which brought the "personal humor" up and then the moderators in and the whole thing, it went from transmission discussion to a zoo. But bahnstormer did make a good point about insisting on the repairs and going elsewhere.... maybe something good did come out of it.

Justin when you say something is wrong, can anything harmful come out of this is my question? And could it be the powersteering pump, since after they pulled the tranny and took out the engine or whatnot the handbrake locks the wheels in all gears and it's loose.

Also, what exactly does the handbrake lock? Since it feels as to me like it locks the driveshaft it feels like if i engaged the handbrake or the handbrake engaged by accident at 10mph it would bend the car in half.....???

On your car the handbrake works emergency brake shoes located inside the rear rotors which would make it feel like it was in the driveshaft. When the trans is removed, they probably have to move or relocate the hand brake mechanism between the seats to make the tranny swap. They probably don't have it installed correctly. As stated before, the motor should not have been removed to swap trany's. . The whining noise could be the ps pump or the front pump in the new tranny which would mean it's replacement again. Hope you get this all worked out. Sometimes I am paranoid to getting anything worked on as sometimes you will go in with one problem and come out with five.

Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated, and oh if you only knew how much truth that final statement carries....

Even more unbelieveable..... The service director denies performing work on the climate controls or anything else. Yet the service director says that when turning on the foglights there is a relay that makes a click sound and its normal now (funny thing is it was NEVER there before, can anyone verify a click sound when putting on foglights). And the handbrake which they tightened locks the rear wheels again.

As for the transmission they claim it was already replaced and they will not replace it again. I even spilled it all out and told them it slipped 2x, they said they will be setting up an appointment with the BMWNA field rep if that will do any good. I intend on just discussing this and demonstrating it to the field rep, and then getting it serviced elsewhere. Anyone know if I'm allowed to take off the BMW of Manhattan ads on the license plate mounts?

To top it all off the Service Advisor tells me to go ahead and give him all 1's and its fine with him.......... maybe it really is a BS survey and its a big bluff.

This is territory for the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Protection. Wow!

I would also ask for the GM of the dealership and tell him what the service manager said. That's pretty poor.

The service director is supposed to call back tomorrow, I really wonder what's next or how they will resolve this. Maybe I should place a phonecall to BMWNA customer relations and ask them if I should file an nhtsa complaint on the transmission, and if I need to file against the dealership with the consumer protection board.

Something tells me they know more than what they're saying,(the service director seems to be well aware of whats wrong [tranny sound, etc]) I just need to experience first hand exactly how full of it they are...... Maybe then I'll know that all the complaints and efforts I make are well deserved.

Well apparently BMWNA doesn't care, and the dealership is playing games with me again. So in two days thats the update... NOTHING, I am now left to go to another dealer and let them cleanup the mess they made. What a shame you'd think that BMW would take better care of their customers.
