BMW Rocks says "I bet you wouldn't think twice about dropping a hundred bucks on a nice dinner with your lady....and your just gonna crap it out the next day!!!!!!!!"

and Krafty is rolling on the floor. Holy Sh!t that was funny.... changed my point of view...

(remember my post was from the viewpoint I was stuck with the lesser grade, not by choice)

peace out.

actually instead of skimping on better gas in your nice car, why don't you save a grand or a whole bunch and get a cheaper car that's ok w/ just unleaded gas? then everything should be settled right?

manufacs recommendations are there for a reason, but hell if you are smarter than the guys that built the thing, all the power to you. your penny bank will thank you.

How much do you actually save by taking the risk of putting Regular instead of Premium in your car? Honestly, is it worth like the $0.10 per gallon? So every tank you fill up, you save like $2...wow. What I'm trying to say is, in my opinion, the price difference is so marginal it's not even worth it. Besides, what BMW owner can't afford to fill up the tank with Premium??
Right on my NJ brother, these people need to realize life is short to be worrying about saving a few bucks. I mean if you can afford a Bimmer, chances are you aren't in that bad of a financial sitation. [?|]

just an engine? i'm confused..... i thought this was an enthusiasts bmw forum? [rolf] i'm just messing with you, though i do disagree.

bmw engines are tuned to fine particulars right out of the box, thats why with a $400 chip i only get 1-2hp, that alone shows that bmw's are more tuned than other cars.

just an engine.... [V]

What determans the octain req'd for a car is the compresion ratio, so if you realy want to know if 89 is okay or you need the hard stuff 93 octain that is, check out what your engins compresion ratio is.

Not regular, mid-grade. There is a difference. Don't snub $2, it adds up to big numbers over time. Again, this is NOT a money issue, it's weather or not you can safely use something other than 91+ octane.

Why has no one addressed my comment on why you guys change your oil so often instead of abiding by the manufacturers specs? Why is BMW 'wrong' and you find it so essential to change it before BMW says you need to? If what the factory says is gospel, what gives?

More fuel for the fire (pun indended) - my dealer even said screw premium & put in mid-grade. Go figure! I'm not the only one using mid-grade! Come forward mid-grade users!! Fear not the premium monsters! Repent and you shall be saved![pray]

My 11 cents worth (that's the price difference in my area!):

BMW designs engines to squeeze out every last hp that is reasonable. To do that, as others have said, they choose a higher compression ratio, more advanced timing (increases horsepower), and THEREFORE the higher octane requirement to prevent preignition.

Next, BMW (and all other car manufacturers) put the knock sensor in so they can detect preignition (which WILL damage the engine, this cannot be disputed) and let the computer back off the timing, eliminating the preignition thereby protecting the engine.

So the fact does remain that Premium will give you the best POTENTIAL performance especially under heavy load. But how much performance will you loose using mid-grade? Probably just a few hp, which you really can't feel. As Krafty mentioned, Europe is hit and miss for Premium. In Germany & Austria I had no problem getting Premium. In Italy it did not exist.

But I have and will continue to use Premium because that's what the engine was DESIGNED for. Big Daddy said it best - if I don't run the recommended gas, then I may as well use straight 30 weight oil, no antifreeze, Pep Boys tires, run it thru the carwash, ah, hell just don't even wash it! Well crap, I shoulda bought a Kia!! I am such a dumb ass for buying a BMW!!

By the way, I CAN tell a difference in power and gas mileage when I tow my boat with my Suburban - I getter BETTER gas mileage and can tow faster UP HILLS when I run Premium. That's a fact, jack. I have checked the gas mileage several times using both ratings on the exact same trip. I get about 1 mpg more on Premium.

Here's what preignition can do to your engine. See the hole and edge notch? Note that because your car has a knock sensor you hopefully will never have this happen to you!

Again, I'm not disputing the advantage of premium or the fact that it does offer increased performance and fuel economy. I'm arguing that it is not REQUIRED for your car and should someone CHOOSE to run mid-grade fuel instead their vehicle will not fall apart, blow up, run like a '89 Ford Escort, etc..

I'm a wild man, I will continue to use that panther piss they call mid-grade and report back the results of my abuse as the problems arise. I'm even thinking about switching to regular (87 octane) and add some water to save my pennies even further and see how smart that engine software really is! Or maybe I'll feed her straight Bacardi 151.. I figure that's good for at least 80 octane. [joke]

How did a simple question turn into 3 pages of pure mahem?

Good eyes MyHarley!! I had to wipe that out - I didn't want to take the time to reconstruct those words when I moved the needle (which the angle is not quite right if you noticed). The other giveaway is the insane gas mileage at that speed/RPM range...

... there is ONE last givaway (I think its a big one too) Can you see what's wrong with this picture?!
