Denial is the first stage that Sliptronic owners go through.[joke]

OH SO TRUE!!
Read my first few posts in this thread and you will see that I didn't want to believe it either.
that is untill when parked on a slight hill, I backed up a few feet, then put it in drive and continued going downhill.......backwards[?|] Talk about the ultimate driving experience!

So guys post your odometer readings when this hidden 'feature' first appeared. I'm curious since my '03 325i is sitting around 5,000 miles. Not any issues yet, but kinda makes you wonder!

Had a long talk with my service manager yesterday. Funny thing is, he just picked up a new X5 and it's doing the same thing, so he knew exactly what the deal was. Apparently, so does BMW.

All 3 series and X5's will be getting brand new transmissions to fix this problem. They are currently replacing all the cars in the current production pipeline for North America, and then plan to move on to the Northern states first, and then the rest of the country. All of you will be getting notices in the mail and after that you can schedule a replacement tranny with your dealer. At least they're finally going to fix the problem eh?

He said it's a pressure issue in the tranny, in cold weather it takes longer to build sufficient pressure to shift to first from reverse, in warm weather it's not an issue. That's why it's just coming to their attention, now that it's cold.

Thanks for the info guys! It's been in the low 30s/upper 20s in the morning, and the temprature is dropping for the weekend. Since BMW knows about it, is there any place to check what VINs/build dates are effected?

This is really interesting....

After reading some of these recent posts, I called my dealership (Fields in Winter Park, FL) and they know NOTHING about any service bulletins or anything about slipping steptronics!!!

They gave me a whole line about how they cannot even check the "hotline" until they have my car. Hmmmmmm.

Needless to say I made an appointment for 12/27 to bring it in and get a loaner so they can check it out.

How is it that some of you alls dealerships know so much and mine knows absolutely nothing??????

Mick,

The pressure problem is with the clutch pack that I was describing earlier. What I find interesting is that my dealer is fixing by replaciong the clutch pack, but sounds like BMW is deciding to replace transmissions now.... I will have to talk with my dealership and see why they are doing the clutch pack replacements.

My car has 4454 miles on it........... And thats when this thing happened with it reving high twice and then grabbing it twice till it finally caught, but it always seemed to do a bump after backing up the driveway length and starting to go forward... perhaps 1000miles???? when the bump started and 4500 for the slip I just described or maybe it is just the 30's weather.

I know what you mean, the dealer told me the same thing at first. Then the shop forman made some calls and called me back to tell me they would be replacing the transmissions, He at first said I would need to bring the car in and they would verify the problem, after that they would do the paper work and submit it to BMW. However I got a call from them this a.m. saying they have a transmission in for me and wanted me to bring my car in asap to do the replacement. Maybe BMW knows the cars that need to have this replacement done and are just going ahead with sending out new transmissions to the dealers where the cars were purchased. They told me I was the only one that had called them with this problem.

Not sure what to make of the different dealers thoughts on this issue, but mine seemed to be all over it when I talked to him yesterday. He said there was a service bulletin on it and again, all tranny's will be replaced, no repaired. He said BMW told him specifically not to tear any of them apart but to wait for replacement units. He knew right away what I was talking about. Maybe because I'm in Michigan, and the Northern, ie cold weather states, are going to get serviced first. If you live in the south they may not have been notified yet? Doesn't seem likely, but the fact that my manager has a brand new X5 that's slipping may have gotten him to dig into the issue sooner than most.

If you call and your guy is still clueless, I'll give you the name and number for my service manager and they can contact him.

I just spoke to my service manager, he confirmed what Mick had said earlier, about doing the northern states first. They had a limited supply of the part needed (clutch pack) in the eastern region and were able to fix a limited amount of cars. Mine happened to be one of them. He also explained that anyone getting a new tranny will be getting a remanufactured one. You guys can confirm with your dealers, but that is what I am hearing.

This is exactly what my dealer told me. However ... there are people on Roadfly who are claiming that their dealer has guaranteed a completely new tranny. I don't know what's going on.

Mine appeared at 1500 miles.

FYI. Not all 325s have the GM problem tranny. Some have another one (I think called "ZF"?).

Well, the second transmission has been installed. The $0.00 dollar invoice did note "RECALL in the Cause section. I that this fixes it once and for all. If you need additional information please feel free to email at terry@borntxn.com or reply to this post.

Thanks,
Terry
Please keep us posted as to how the new tranny is performing for you. Thanks.
