Thanks for all the information. I had a 03' 325i loaner. In the morning after cold start, the car accelerated very fast, and I did have to hit the brake to prevent it from going forward too fast. However, in a car with transmission problem, it won't even go if you press the accelerator.
It depends upon how bad the problem is. Some people can go up to 5k rpm without any movement ... with others it's very subtle and you go to 1500-2000k rpm with very little movement.

Larry the head of the service department told me it would be brand new, should I request this in writing? They are due to call me in a few weeks when the tranny comes in. And if it turns out that it is remanufactured and/or it does not solve the problem does anyone on this board have any idea what step needs to be taken?

Oh and the tranny not only slips on a cold start, but it feels as if theres a bump sound when accelerating somewhat quickly from a stoplight or leaving a parking space etc...

I was told the same thing. You can ask for it in writing, but I doubt that they will oblige.

Don't know about next steps. If this verifies, I am going to ask to meet with the service mgr. and the sales mgr. They are halfway to Lemon Law territory already. I told them I'd be fine with this if it is fixed right the first time. But if it's not, I am not going to stand for continued appts. and attempts to resolve.

My car was in Thursday for the new transmission. Took it in at 8 AM, they called at 1:30 PM saying it was ready. I got a 325xi Touring (wagon) as a loaner - not bad, I wouldn't buy one, but it handled pretty much just like a 325i.

When I picked up my car, they had me sign a warranty work order. I noticed 2 things
1. The value of the transmission was $3650
2. It said REMAN TRANSMISSION as the description.

I asked the SA if that meant it was remanufactured (which I really new that it did). He said that he thought so, they had requested a new transmission, that was what they received from BMW NA. He invited me back into the service department to look at the old transmission and box.

They had packed the old transmission in the same box to return it to BMW NA. The box was very clearly labeled as BMW with German language stickers all over it, shipping labels in German, etc. There was also an inventory sticker that said REMANUFACTURED, so there really is no question as to what they are installing.

I've decided that this is not a big deal to me, especially since the first replacement transmission I got was a NEW replacement and it was bad. I am trusting that BMW puts the same quality into their remanufactured transmissions as they do original ones. Also, I would rather have a factory controlled rebuild, as opposed to a dealer service bay clutch pack replacement that may not be as clean, etc. A good, brand new transmission would have been ideal, but legally they can replace it with a rebuilt transmission.

The full warranty still applies, and if there are any problems at all, I will not hesitate at this point to pursue Lemon Law action.

I'll post a report in a few weeks or so. The car is probably going see little or no driving due to the cold weather and predicted snowfall here, so it could even be 2 months until it gets a few hundred miles on it.

By the way, once again, I have to say that I got very good service from the dealer. They were fast, gave me a nice loaner car, etc. I truly believe the dealer has to do what BMW NA says or ships to them. They even washed the car and had it warmed up waiting for me to pick up.

re: remanufactured or new tranny

The dealership has to ask for BMW NA for replacement tranny, and my SA told me that they don't have any choices. Just put the request for replacement tranny, BMW NA will reply them with permission and then ship one to them presumably from Germany. I was told that the tranny will always be called re-manufactured thought all the parts are brand new (never having been on a vehicle) except the casing. I was wondering if the old casing will be a big deal, why don't they just use a new casing and call the whole thing brand new if the casing is cheap, in which way it can make us feel a lot better.

It is funny how everyone prefers the fix that they received for their car. IE: I prefer the clutch pack, others prefer the replacement tranny..... It is these little things that help us all deal with this issue and not totally flip out

my appointment is next friday but so far BMW has said this is normal and I would have to deal with it. What do you guys think? Also did they hook up your cars to the computer to figure this problem out or they just took your word and the manual test in the morning? I don't know, I'm beginning to think nothing will come out of all this at the end and I will have to deal with it.

My dealer test drove it and then hooked it up to take measurements.

If you're appt. is Friday, drop it off Thursday night with explicit instructions to leave it outdoors overnight and have the tech coldstart it in the AM ... specifically looking for proper tranny engagement during initial acceleration in "D" while cold. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.

If it turns out the transmission is remanufactured, and they refuse to certify it being brand new in writing, I see no point in refusing the replacement. Maybe calling the service manager a liar might be an option? [fake] any ideas?

New/Replacement Slips

This replacement (off the assembly line and fixed, I was told) is WORSE than the original unit. All the signs, of course manifesting when cold and when car has sat for 10 hrs or more. Dealer sounded flabbergasted this AM, but I sounded PISSED (but polite). Will let you all know what the regional rep. says, i.e. what the dealer now tells me.

So, much like buying a new steptronic, are we just rolling the dice with these replacement trannies?? What an absolute joke.

OMG that absolutely sucks and is an absolute joke. I am so sorry to hear that, and there is nothing that could comfort you from the distress you must be feeling.

A few months ago I was all distressed when they replaced my buzzing passesnger speaker and it starts buzzing again a few days later!!!! Pales in comparison, I know.

Your story is the exact reason I am waiting on getting my Sliptronic fixed.......although with all the stories in here I think most people so far are rolling their point rather than a seven. Of course I bet a horn high aces and a dollar twelve on the comeout roll every time (and then press them both if it hits), which may classify me as a gambling man.......

[mad] That sucks! Mine has not been out of the garage since I brought it home from the shop, and with the crappy weather it won't be out for a while. Hehe, it will probably have sat for a month, so that should give it plenty of time [rolleyes] to drain down, if it is going to. This is BAD NEWS!!!!

Why dont you guys hold off and wait a couple monnths/years and allow BMW to figure this out? It only happens when it is cold and only once in the morning...maybe it will never give you any further major problems and you can keep you brand new tranny? [:(]
Just a thought.
I stress out every time I see this thread![bigcry]

Problem is ... it's unhealthy for the car. The recommended circumvention is to warm the car up, and that is not good for the engine. Also, for those of us that have brand new cars, why should we wait? The more times we bring it in and they don't repair it, the closer we are to Lemon Law territory.

It happens more than that, but it is only slight and gets a few bumping sounds on the car usually after a stoplight or accelerating from a toll both with a generous amount of throttle

With everyone speaking of "lemon laws", can someone clarify exactly what they are? How many times must the sliptronic attempt to be fixed before the law kicks in? And what exactly happens when the law kicks in? Refund? Replacement???
