A few days ago I reported that, in zero degree F weather, the "new" tranny slipped again. Today, in 20 F weather it did not, but I introduced a new parameter (sorry). Basically, we live on a hill, so when I back out and then place in Drive, I have been on an incline (i.e. for all previous slip-related posts I have provided). Today I simply backed straight out, stopped, placed in Drive and drove back into my driveway (no incline). No slip today, when doing this.

So, I ask: Does the incline/hill exacerbate the slippage problem, or would such a manuever in the AM without warmup pretty much make ANY automatic car hesitate or slip?

Yes, I will test the tranny again, in this more moderate weather, going up the incline instead of on level ground as I did this AM.

I am on an incline too... I think this might have something to do with the problem, but I have noticed it slip slightly without the incline, or make a "bump" sound when engaging into d and accelerating quickly

Possibly makes it worse ... bit I am not on an incline ... and have the problem. Not as severe as some others though.

The sound like a crack or a catch... thats the COLD bmw brakes..... they just need to warm up a little before they stop smoothly. I dont know if this is normal, but I've been assuming it is
I let it warm up longer and everything seems to be fine. Thanks!

Mine went in tonight for the second transmission in 3 months. The SA said that it is getting a new transmission, not the clutch pack replacement. He said that with all the problems I have had they wanted only a new transmission and nothing else. As I have said before, my dealer has provided excellent service for me. Got a 330i loaner while they have my car.

Oooops - a misunderstanding on my part. The car went in today so that they could VERIFY that I was still having the problem. I thought that they were taking my word for it and had just ordered the transmission. So yes, indeed it did it quite nicely for them.

They gave me a 2003 330i loaner, and processed a request for a new transmission. They expect it in sometime next week. They are still saying a full NEW transmission replacement, no rebuilt, no clutch pack swap.[thumb]

Since I have the car back for a few days, I'm going to crawl underneath and check the tranny that's in there, maybe even put a small telltale mark on it just to do my own "Quality Audit".

That is interesting ... my SA told me I was getting a new one also ... and instead of having to wait a month for it .. I also had mine show up within 7-10 days. My appt. is next week, so I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Kirby ... what will it accomplish for you to crawl underneath and put a mark on it?

Sliptronic Updates

my 2004 330cic has had a sliptronic from day one (i.e., it slips when going from reverse to forward on cold mornings and engine revs with car going nowhere).

I have been battling with service adviser and BMWNA over their solution, which is to install a "remanufactured" transmission. My position is a remanufactured transmission is not something I want to put in a car that has only 3000 miles on it. I'd prefer new.

I spoke with a very knowledgable rep today at BMWNA who indicates that he did a lot of research on this issue in order to make sure he was giving people accurate info.

He was certain that the remanufactured transmissions were brand new units that were either pulled at the GM factory in France and modified or were pulled at the assembly plant and sent back to the factory in France for modification. He was certain that none of the units had any used parts in them. He said that BMW had to label these basically new transmissions as remanufactured only because of the modification.

Because this guy seemed to really know his stuff about BMW and demonstrated that knowledge to me in several ways, I am inclined to believe him. So, I'm going to schedule my car for the install next week some time. Hopefully, this will solve the problem.

Still a disappointment, but I have to say, it's drastically better than what I thought "remanufactured" meant.

This was pretty much what I was told from BMW NA; however, it should be mentioned that the casing of the "remanufactured" tranny is, and the only, old part.

My SA also told me that he was going to get it within a week or so for the new tranny. I was wondering if those tranny would have to be shipped from France or they're already in stock somewhere in the states.

I got a call this morning from my SA. The transmission is in and will be installed on Monday. That was only 3 days (Wed - Fri) from ordering to delivery, so they must be here in the US.

New Tranny SLIPS

My wife now reports to me that the tranny slipped, not even on the incline outside our driveway, the other day. Okay, the weather was in the single digits F, so that may be a factor. However, this was supposed to be a tranny off the assembly line, not a used one with rebuilt internals - you know, all the reassurances some of us have been getting within the past several weeks, from BMWNA and dealers.

Our first BMW. What a POS (for the money). Go ahead - flame me if you wish, and yes there are MANY meritorious points which might outweight the demerits (i.e. the transmission), blame it on a French-made/GM tranny or whatever, but at the end of the day we bought a BMW and this situation is inexcusable. My next step is a discussion with my attorney and a few email messages to the car magazines.

We also have this problem on a new (335miles) 04 330cic. I thought I would post here as it seems that most reports have indicated that the problem only occurred with French made transmissions. The sticker on our car indicates that the trans was made in Germany, but it most definitely exhibits the exact problem on first cold reverse to drive shift.

What a disappointing discovery! My wife (her car) and I had both noticed this behavior at least once, but weren't quite sure what we were experiencing. After reading on Roadfly and then this thread, I ran a controlled test this morning - the car rolled backward down a slight incline for about 30-40 yards, with the revs climbing up to about 2500 before the trans started to engage.

Spoke with our salesman first (our fourth new BMW from him) to register extreme disappointment (it's clear this is not an uncommon problem and the dealer should be checking their stock) and then with the service manager. Svc. Mgr. acknowledged they had replaced a few trans for similar problems. She did some checking then called back to say she would get auth. from BMW to order new trans on Monday - said she expected there was going to be a recall but not enough trans in pipeline at this point to support. Recommended warming up by revving in park prior to driving when cold until they can get new trans in.

Anyway - much of this just confirms many of the other posts here - but wanted to point out that this is on a trans supposedly made in Germany (according to window sticker).

(Side question - is there a way to check our car's assembly date using VIN or other info from sticker?)

Yes the assembly date should be where the the door opens on the drivers side of the car.

Also P Eden, did you discuss it over with the dealer and get an unsatisfactory outcome, before you've decided to take the next step? If so then you're justified in ranting over BMW's "courteous, kind, and understanding" service department.[fake]

You can put your key in a reader at the service advisor's; it will show your VIN and production data as well as the mileage.

So I guess the question becomes is it reasonable for a normal tranny to slip in extremely cold weather. Is there any way we can get an answer to this from an impartial source?
