I agree. Problem is ... we need some mechanism to communicate each other's progress to each other.

Replacement Misc.

Tested the (2nd) replacement tranny for our '04 330 xi this AM, temps in the mid-upper 20s F. No slipping - car moved forward normal after I slapped it into Drive, with no warm-up, etc. So I think this one is good.

Info.: Dealer informs me that the fixed trannies should "have a blue or a green stripe" on them, and must be a "certain serial number - that is, above a certain number." Vague, yes, sorry. He states that our first replacement lacked these hallmarks of a fixed unit, but that the current one had them. Swears this one is a brand new unit, that was fixed. FYI.

please keep it cool guys, i don't want to lock this thread if it gets too heated
in here. so lets keep it informative, and put out the sparks before the fire
starts.
I really hope that this thread doesn't get locked. Until recently it has been helping a ton of people - look at the number of reads.

Since I started the thread, I feel some level of right to suggest the following:

Keep this thread an informative FACTS ONLY thread. Your experiences regarding your SlipTronic problems. There is still alot that we can learn from each other AND it serves a very important purpose - people who are considering buying a Steptronic can use the information.

I will not be responding to anyone who posts otherwise in this thread.

The debating, lawsuits and activist discussion should be done in the other thread that was started FOR that purpose. I'm not sure why it had to spill over here:
http://forum.bmwboard.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6548

I hope that everyone can agree to this. Destroying this thread helps ABSOLUTELY NOBODY.

Back to the HELPFUL posts

I have an appointment Tuesday to leave my 2004 330Cic with SA to confirm slip. He advised by phone that he's familiar with the problem. I just picked up the car on 2/5/04. This car just entered port in late January... They had to know the problem was at least possible...probably likely.

I would like to try to get info from you guys on the success rate with repairs so far.

Anybody with the clutch pack get a complete fix?

Anybody with a new tranny (would like to hear from those with recent replacements... and preferably only one) that's completely fixed.

Someone created a survey... are there any new results?

The SA was very reassuring and has already arranged for a loaner... I'll keep you posted

Are there other boards with a GOOD DISCUSSION of the potential remedies... I'm not interested in safety boards, complaints and law suits... just a remedy for the problem

THANKS

Lets make this clear... if we understand you correctly Keith, you recently layed down $44k+ for a vehicle your dealership and service advisor knew to have defects. You now seek advice on how you should proceed from members of this forum. I ask you, what remedy do YOU feel is fair? PONDEROUS MAN!!

OK ... now I'm gonna ask a question to the moderator. We have now proven that we are willing to move forward in a constructive fashion. But the person above appears to want to continue to harass the people who are trying to make constructive use of this thread. I would move to have E46_Driver have his/her ability to update this thread confiscated.

NO WAY

This cat was the one that helped me and many others not accept the situation our SA's were telling us. Impartiality is a must. Never try and silence an honest voice. E46_Driver, my cousin is requiring her dealer to address this steptronic prob before she writes a check. I forwarded your posts and she was able to argue her concerns in an intelligent manner. Dealer has not yet accepted her order.

Signed,
Cousin Ed

KEITH,

I had the clutch pack fix done about 2 months ago and have had no problem since. From what I have been hearing it sounds like most of the replacement trannies that other people are having installed are new trannies with the fix already applied.

CORRECT... If others have "been through the mill" and are willing to share, then I'm willing to listen. The remedy I feel is fair is the quickest and surest FIX for the problem. BMW will not be passing out replacement cars and I don't expect any money. I suspect that the dealership will be extremely accomodating and work to get this resolved quickly. I'm just interested in what has worked and what hasn't so I can be more informed when talking with the SA.

Even though it seems some have had to make repeat trips, some seem to have been fortunate enough to get the problem fixed the first time in the shop. I'm just interested in helpful information. I already know how to be grumpy; I just try not to.

Keith

Our 2004 330 CI had a "slipper" in it from day one. I only confirmed this problem by READING THIS HELPFUL THREAD [:o)] . We had the replacement tranny done about 3 weeks ago with 1100 miles on the clock. The tranny has been flawless since (albeit a short time). It has been cold here, but our car is always garaged, but originally slipped anyway.

I think having BWM remedy the problem is the quickest way to solve this issue, not lawsuits, etc. Lawsuits etc take YEARS to resolve. Hopefully our tranny issue is resolved now. We really love the car[thumb]

I do agree that lawsuits is not the best way of solving issues in general. It only enriches the lawyers. However, I find it troubling that BMW dealerships continue to sell cars known to be defective without notifying the buyer of the potential problem. Where is the full disclosure?

Even the loaner 2004 325i with 800 miles on it that the dealer let us use was slipping too[:0]

I got mine '04 330CiC back last Friday after transmission has been exchanged (rebuilt, of course!). So far (3 days) no slipping problem. We'll see...

My history: '04 325XI initially reported Sliptronic 12/03, tranny replaced mid-January '04. Still had doubts as upon coldstart shifting into "D", car stays at about 5mph while pressing accelerator enough to move from 800rpms to 1200rpms (no additional forward motion).

Just got back from the dealer. The shop foreman (very very close to and familiar with all the tranny issues) test drove the car upon coldstart and is satisfied that the tranny is acting normally. He really gave the accelerator a push way down first ... and the car responded ... said that if the tranny were still a problem, there would have been some slippage.

The car has now been test driven by an expert mechanic and the shop foreman. Case closed.

By the way, they confirmed with me that my replacement would have been one of the first that would truly correct the problem. It was ordered in mid-December '03 and arrived in late December '03. I think this kinda proves that the problem wasn't truly understood and corrected until around that time.
