We have lots of wide open country roads around here with little traffic and
even fewer cops, so one day I decided to take my 02'330i out and see what
it would do.
At the crack of dawn on a Sunday morning I chose a nice, flat, straight,
newly paved piece of road with a generous shoulder and no trees,
obstructions or crossroads for miles. It had good visibility, making it easy to
spot any traffic, cops, or other hazards well in advance.
One of dangers that came to mind while I was planning my little law breaking
adventure was deer, around here we get quite a few that like to jump out in
front of the unsuspecting motorist and get pasted, something that would be
catastrophic at two or three times the speed limit.
Fortunately, this was
in the fall and there was nothing but plowed cornfields on either side of the road.
Having no place for them to hide and ambush me made me feel a little more at ease.
Anyway, as I accelerated I really liked how the 330 just kept pulling, even
as I passed 100mph, nice linear torque, impressive for a six cylinder. It crept
right up to about 135 pretty quickly, where the electronic governor kept me
from getting any sillier. It felt like it could have kept right on accelerating, I
didnt notice how close I was to the redline as I was too busy watching the
road. Handing was rock solid, felt like I could have been doing 60, smooth as
could be and not a waver in the steering. My previous car, an 01 Trans Am,
would do about 155 but could start feeling a leeeetle vague and spooky at
those speeds. Not the beemer though, a confidence inspring car for sure.
