I was told it is "the unfavorable tolerances of forward clutch housing causing internal transmission pressure leak after overnight parking" which causes the symptoms we see here. I was wondering if replacement of clutch pack will actually solve the problem in this case. The BMW suggests replacement of the whole transmission though.

Regarding the New Replacement vs. Rebuilt transmission issue, my Service Advisor told me that I was getting a new transmission when they did the replacement in October, not a rebuilt, because it was too early in the 2004 production year for rebuilts to even be available in the pipeline. But who knows? Since the replacement one has the problem too, it just may have been a new one off the production line.

I had a similair experience about 1.5 days....

Sieben,

You are correct also, the problem was a tolerance issue in the first clutch pack. The replacement DOES fix the problem. BMW is suggesting to replace the tranny because it is the easiest fix for them. Otherwise they ned to get a tranny tech out to all of these diff dealerships. From my understanding, there are not many people within BMW who can do this.

From My Understanding BMW identified the problem in NOV

Hmmm. Just spoke to my CA. He told me that my tranny was not ordered via the "normal" ordering process, and that together with the fact that it is too early after the problem was fully understood, is why he is saying I should trust that it is new. He says that the earlier replacement trannys did not have the new clutch pack.

And I was just told by BMWNA that "a tranny from off the assembly line (and fixed) was shipped to my dealer." Dealer tells me it is in, ready for work tomorrow on my '04 330 xi. I asked the service manager to open the crate and confirm that it is indeed a brand-new tranny (if possible). Awaiting his word this AM...

UPDATE - Build Date

Service manager just informed me that the tranny just shipped, for installation in our 330 xi has a production code of 9/30/03. So, what does everybody think - could this indeed be taken right off the assembly line, or could it have been in another '04 car and is now a rebuilt?? My sense (and hope) is that too few '04 sliptronics have been actually returned (between October/November i.e. when this one may have been in a car) for this unit to have any miles on it. What do you all think?

If that date represents the build date of a rebuilt tranny, who knows where the parts came from and how many miles they had on them? Even if it is new and built on 9/30/03, if the problem wasn't fully understood until November, how could this tranny possibly resolve the problem?

Tranny per se (actual unit) has a production stamping-casting date of 9/30/03 - I did not mean to imply that the paperwork stated such e.g. for a rebuilt unit. That leads me to believe that this might indeed be a transmission "off the assembly line" as they claim. Service manager tells me it "looks brand new; no markings at the installation mounting points which would indicate it has been installed in a car." Christ, I don't know - I am tempted to storm the place with my digital camera, to take pics of this unit.

If the casting Date is 9/30/03, there's just no way it could be a rebuilt. The transmissions are probably not assembled at the foundry (foundry debris in an assembly plant? no way) so it probably wasn't even assembled until late October at the earliest. For it to be a rebuild, it would have had to been installed in a car at the factory, delivered to and driven by a customer, pulled out, rebuilt and put back into inventory all in 3 months. No way could that happen. BMW would have to be EXTREMELY efficient to make that happen.

more tranny problems

thank God someone at roadfly gave me the link to this thread.

I've got same problem.

My dealer refuses to give me a new transmission. I've got 3000 miles on my 330cic, and I don't want a used transmission in my car. Like others, I've had bad experiences with rebuilt equipment.

Has anyone had any luck getting BMW to extend the warranty past the 50k point to cover this used tranny they want to install?

Also, is there any belief that the installs they are doing actually solve the problem?

thanks so much.

tracy

First Bangle, and now this. I think my BMW days are coming to a close.

Replacement tranny installed today; service manager still swears it is off the assembly line. I told them all that I would be calling Autoweek et al. to alert them to this potential BMW debacle if I find out it is a true remanufactured unit, not a "fixed" new one.

Pretty cold this week in NE PA (20s), so I will test the replacement tranny over the next several days, and will report findings in this thread.

Almost a month with the new one

Guys,

It has almost been a month (the 8th) that they replaced mine. I took it easy with the new tranny until this weekend, then I let it have it. Used all functions of the tranny and drove it hard. Parked it on Saturday around 3 and did not get back in until this morning, temps in the low 30's to upper 20's and the thing worked like my 2003. I will continue to keep you all posted and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!

Unless I missed something early on, sounds like we're seeing the first reports of successfully addressing the problem with full tranny replacement. I know that a couple of folks have had recent success with clutch pack replacement ... and I know that I remember seeing several people who had trannys replaced a couple of months ago which didn't resolve the problem.

Yes, it's good news. I guess BMW finally figure out the problem on the transmission. I got information from my service people that dealership doesn't have an option to specify the condition of the replacement transmission. But he did say that the replacement does directly come from transmission manufacturer. I guess now might be a good time to do the replacement. Also, what do you think if BMW will actually do a recall on this?

transmission on m/s mode

I found that the transmission can engage quickly if I put on M/S mode (2nd gear) while it will not immediately engage on D or on M/S (1st gear) after overnight parking. Did anyone have same experience? I was wondering what causes this.

To my understanding with the two transmissions that I have had replaced, there is a valve that leaks fluid during a immobile period and when restarted it requires a moment or two for that valve to refill with fluid before the transmission will engage.

called the sa again---still waiting for words from BMW

The SA said that BMW is still working on the problem without a final fix [mad] [mad] so did the BMW NA said. What do you guys think? Should I have my tranny replaced or hold on for a little while, since the symptons on my car are not severe?

I am in the same boat as you as mine does the slip, but not severe.

I am gonna hold out as my dealership in Winter Park FL (Fields BMW) has no idea about the problem. They claim they have no info or records from BMW about this and I am the only one who has contacted them about this! Amazing.....[?|] [?|]

To Sieben: That is not what my dealership (and others) has told me. They claim that the issue has been resolved with the latest fix. Others on this very board have recently had the problem resolved by replacement of the tranny or the clutch assembly.

To bmwrocks: I would not wait. My SA told me that if you drive the car this way, it can do some harm (can't remember to which component). Who are you speaking with at your dealership? If you really want to know the truth, speak to your shop foreman (not to a service advisor) or the service manager.
