I finally got resolution to my tranny issues when I approached the Dealership Owner. I purchased a 2003 330CiC in April and a 2004 330CiC in June form the same dealership. Upon my complaint they worked directly with BMW NA and as I have stated the problem is doing well, Dec 8 installation. Also as stated there was the words “RECALL” on my last invoice from the dealer.

To Sieben,

I reported the same about putting in manual a month or 2 back.... When putting in manual it bypasses the problem. I was doing this for a while until they replaced the faulty clutch pack.

Mine is scheduled to go back in next Wednesday for the fourth time. At this point they are not sure if it will be a new tranny or the Clutch Pack fix. My SA seems to think that the decision will be based on reviewing the serial number of the tranny that is currently installed. They are reviewing it with BMW NA to get a decision.

He did mention that they did a clutch pack swap last week with a BMW NA tech on an xi, and all seems well so far.

To my understanding with the two transmissions that I have had replaced, there is a valve that leaks fluid during a immobile period and when restarted it requires a moment or two for that valve to refill with fluid before the transmission will engage.
I just called the service manager for my 2004 330ci and he pretty much told me what you're saying, that it's a problem with the oil valve/pump. At least that's what BMW has told him. When I mentioned the clutch pack install that people on this board is talking about, it's the first time he heard this. He told me that they are awaiting a fix from BMW and to just keep my foot on the brake for 2-8 sec while putting it into "drive" in the morning before going. It seems to work thus far. BTW, mine doesn't even need to be put in reverse and then drive to manifest the problem. I can just put it into drive and it'll have the slip problem.

goofyRider, Sounds like your dealer does not know enough info abut the problem then. He should know about the clutch pack... Many people on these threads have had it replaced and fixed the issue. I havea buddy who works at my dealership and I know that this is the issue.

I've had my replacement transmission now for 3 weeks it's working fine. I wouldn't think that the trasmissions being sent out are rebuilt, they would not have time or enough to do this yet. But even if they are you still have a long warranty and through that time if nothing goes wrong it will most likley not. If the new tranny you get has problems it will show up way befor the warranty is over. As far as the clutch pack fix I would not have it, I don't want a tranny that was not assembled at the plant. Also I was told the BMW tranny is sealed and not to be opened. Well that's my two cents.
Good luck to all

BMW tranny is not "sealed"... I think by sealed they mean it does not need to be serviced. fluids etc... But just like any component on a car can be opened and fixed.

Does anyone know if there is a Technical Service Bulletin or a Recall going to be issued? So far, one is not listed for the 325i:

Neither is it listed for any of the othe 3 series:
http://www.alldata.com/TSB/0306_mo.html

I have yet to experience this problem. What does the forum recommend those of us w/o the problem do?
der Kaiser: From everything I have seen and everything I understand, there actually is an official recall. But proactive recall notices have apparently not been sent out (at least not yet) ... perhaps because BMW has apparently just gotten their arms around fully understanding this within the past month or so.

If you don't have the problem, fantastic! If it were me, I'd check to see if I have a GM tranny (some are not GM but are ZFs) ... you can check the sticker and see where it was manufactured ... if it's France ... supposedly, it's GM. And to be safe, you might want to mention it to your SA on your next visit (and leave it overnight telling them to leave the car outside) and ask them to test the tranny for you. On some cars, it's very subtle.

I have the problem when backing out of my driveway in the morning, but I haven't noticed it lately.

The new thing is when I stop at the corner after backing out of my driveway the car feels like I got tapped from behind (the car jerks forward when I come to a stop). Has anyone else experienced this? It only happens during the first 1-2 stops in the morning. After that it goes away.

The sound like a crack or a catch... thats the COLD bmw brakes..... they just need to warm up a little before they stop smoothly. I dont know if this is normal, but I've been assuming it is

Back to Sliptronic Topic - Update

"New" replacement tranny has been in wife's 330 xi (1600 miles on it) for about 5 days, and this AM I had a chance to test it. Uh.... it slipped again - not a lot, but perceptible. HOWEVER, the temp this AM was -4 F and likely even colder overnight. I allowed no warmup, so I am thinking that perhaps it is just too damn cold and thus not a good test condition. At least that's what I am hoping. Will test again when temps get back in the 20s and 30s, and will report. Good god.

Whacky COLD startup

Speaking of being cold this afternoon was the craziest start up ever...... At 13 F the engine starts up with a metal on metal rubbing sound (like an about to fall apart sound) and gets a tremendous gas smell everywhere and after backing out slowly and then turning on to the road the engine revs up to 5-6k then 4k then 5k all the while slowly moving up the road with absurdly high revs till it finally catches after half a minute. Then the climate control gets this disgusting burning smell forcing me to turn it off and open the windows. I pulled over a few blocks to go to a store leaving the engine running for a minute then returned to find it operating normal...... Anyhow its scheduled for next week at the dealership. Maybe BMW is just a warm weather only car.[???1]

Boston or RI Dealer Experience

Hello, I am wondering if anybody had experience dealing with the slipping tranny issue at Boston or Rhode Island area dealers. My 2003 300xi is slipping and I am looking for the most experienced local dealer to deal with. Thanks Bill

anybody checked out the replacement tranny?

Is it really brand new or re-built? My SA, as well as BMW NA, told me that the replacement tranny will be re-built. But it is as good as new one or better (who knows?)--all the parts are new but just re-manufactured and comes directly from the transmission manufacturer plant, in this case GM. Did anyone who had their trannys replaced check this out? Thanks.

Another Update

A few days ago I reported that, in zero degree F weather, the "new" tranny slipped again. Today, in 20 F weather it did not, but I introduced a new parameter (sorry). Basically, we live on a hill, so when I back out and then place in Drive, I have been on an incline (i.e. for all previous slip-related posts I have provided). Today I simply backed straight out, stopped, placed in Drive and drove back into my driveway (no incline). No slip today, when doing this.

So, I ask: Does the incline/hill exacerbate the slippage problem, or would such a manuever in the AM without warmup pretty much make ANY automatic car hesitate or slip?

Yes, I will test the tranny again, in this more moderate weather, going up the incline instead of on level ground as I did this AM.
