Relax, it's all about the type of oil in the tranny. The clutchpack is most likely what is being done by BMW to their "RMFD trannys" and given to customers. Besides it is probably a better idea to get a clutch pack fix considering nothing goes wrong during the operation and they don't need to remove the engine. Getting a ne.w... sorry, remanufactured transmission one doesn't know where it came from or how many miles were on it, or what *NEW* problems you'll be treated to.
Exactly. Replacement trannys supposedly have new inside parts within a "old" case, and the "new" parts have the "new" clutch pack design. At least that is what my dealer told me.

This service bulletin is dated December 03. Updated to include the X5 on February 2004.
So to conclude folks:
1) This defect has been known and discussed by BMW for a very long time.
2) The service bulletin dd Dec 03 instructs the dealership to replace the transmission
3) These bulletins are in the public domain and can be found easily.

The people on here that have been "working with BMWNA" were either duped or are willing participants to this farce.

Lastly, please ignore me as stated previously.

My buddy works at my BMW dealership and I had my car repaired in Dec. The Clutch Pack IS an acceptable fix. The clutch pack is a more resource intensive fix since the dealership is not allowed to open the tranny and a specialist must come in to do the work. This being said, This is why BMW prefers the Tranny replacement. BMW is only doing clutch pack fixes for customers who are really upset or parts are avail.... Those are the facts. My car and the owners wife's car were done on the same day.

What do you think the fix is in all of the replacment trannies?

Per BMW directive transmission is to be REPLACED. There is no mention of ANYTHING other than replacement from BMW. I would rely on what is in writing from BMW vs. heresay. Sorry you accepted the party line. Clutch Patch will continue to slip and get increasingly worse. What dealership does your buddy work?

Good luck![wave]

You know... I just don't understand it. Why do you have to be so confrontational? If you have a difference of opinion, why can't you state it in a constructive way? I don't think you realize how obnoxious you are coming across. And you know what ... you may think that you are gaining friends and support from the masses for being this way, but you are not. People can see right through an attitude like yours.

There has to be something to what cdotger is saying because my dealer told me the exact same thing. There was a point in time when the replacement trannys were in short supply and there were people getting their clutch packs replaced instead. TSB or not. Why is it so impossible that this could be the case? Read your own TSB: "Correction:
'On a customer complaint basis only after verifying the above situation, REPLACE the transmission with the improved unit'". Where does it say that this is a directive and that no other solution will resolve the problem?

Take it easy guy. There are almost always logical explanations for differences like this.

car_54,

Not everything that is fact is written on paper.

The fix in the replacement trannies is the clutch pack fix.... period... So whether it is done by BMW at the dealership or not it is the same fix.... So clutch pack will not continually slip and get worse.... I really do not want to reveal the dealership that my buddy works at for privacy reasons.

Please.......

Car 54, BMW does what is in their best interest and if you ever took a high school economics course you would understand best interest on the corporate level relies on actual and opportunity cost which includes just about everything from time, to parts, to money.....

Nobody has to prove anything to you, or reveal dealer sources, a little logic will tell you that it boils down to clutch pack on "Rebuilt" a.k.a Garbage Tranny at factory or clutch pack fix on existing tranny, now you go ahead and make your decision based upon those simple logical facts.

I had my tranny replaced and am sorry already, the new sig says it all.

Now, here is your trademark wave... [wave]

BMW instructed the dealerships to REPLACE the transmissions. This is not my interpretation. The technical service bulletin is TIS 24 07 03 is dated Feb 2004.

E46 is correct

The only BMW sanctioned repair was to replace the transmission per their TSB. Dealers attempted many approaches to this issue. A software patch and a clutch patch were attempted and failed. I posted something here sharing someones pro-active stance that is getting results in regard to this issue: http://www.bmwboard.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7211

My question is this: Hhow do you know that "The only BMW sanctioned repair was to replace the transmission"? And don't tell me because that's what's in the TSB. Have you spoken to anyone from BMW who has told you that a clutch pack replacement AT THE SAME LEVEL OF DESIGN/PARTS AS IS IN THE LATEST REMAN REPLACEMENT TRANNYS is not a valid fix for the problem? And if what you are claiming is true, why do you suppose that there have been people on this very board who have reported success with the clutch pack replacement?

Be civil, please. I was.

Interesting how quiet people get when they know they're wrong.

Interesting Message

Typed in a Google search "GM5 Transmission Problem" - second source down, from another BMW board - not sure it is an official service bulletin. Any thoughts?

From: Quality & Service Engineer @ dealers.bmwna.com
Subject: GM5 Transmission Delayed Shift Problem

Vehicles:
'03/'04(up to 11/03) E46 with M54 and GM5 Trans. 325iA, 325XiA, 330XiA, and from 03/03 325A/330A Coupe,Convertible, '03/04 (up to 12/03)E53 X5 3.0 with GM5 Trans.

Situation:
Excessively long delay (5-30 seconds) in gear engagement from Park to Drive on the first cold start. Problem occurs only once a day on the initial start-up.

Cause:
Unfavorable tolerances of forward clutch housing causing internal transmission pressure leak after overnight parking.

Service Fix:
Replacement of defective Transmission with updated unit.
