Bravo, at least someone understands.

Larry... I have talked to many tech people (friends) at BMW.... Clutch Pack replacement is a sanctioned repair... period.... Some people only believe what is in black and white... I mean seriously, what do they think is in the replacement trannies? Some magical fix.... Guess what it is the clutch pack fix..... Not worth our time larry...
I too told them it was "garbage tranny" w/ clutchpack replacement at factory, they still didn't listen. Thing is I stopped posting upon realizing how thick headed the diehard "TSB" believers were.

You guys are right. But I was just trying to get that point across to them. I also would happily accept it if they could provide some information to prove this wrong (NOT the TSB). Sometimes it helps to at least show you're willing to listen. Perhaps they do have some evidence. SOMETHING is causing them to feel very strongly that the replacement tranny is the only authorized solution. My point is if it's only the TSB, nowhere does the TSB make that statement.

Yet, the TSB does tell the dealer to REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. You are realizing many are saying the same thing over and over again yet no one has produced a single document stating the software or the clutch patch were acceptable to BMWNA.

Why do you suppose that is?[wave]

And I would say that no single document states that the clutch patch isn't acceptable to BMWNA either. So who's right? Aren't there sometimes things in life that are implicit?

Car_54,

This is very simple. BMW has a limited number of people in the US who are authorized to crack open a tranny. Normal dealerships do not have this ability. BMW sends out a TSB to it's dealerships to replace trannies that have steptronic issue... For people persistent or high profile customers refusing to wait, BMW is sending a Engineer out to dealership to crack the tranny and replace the clutch pack.... So, It is IMPOSSIBLE for BMW to send these engineers all over the US to replace clutch packs. So TSB says to replace tranny that are already repaired and shipped to dealership. Dealership can then install with no outside help... It is really simple. TSB will not list all available options... only the option the BMW wants the dealerships to do. It is cheaper for BMW to fix trannies in one area and send trannies out then to ship people all over the US to fix by hand. Again, The fix in these new replacement trannies is the clutch pack, so whether it is done in the dealership or @ a factory it is the same thing. I know many people @ my dealership and these are the facts.

The tranny replacement was completed on my car on Thursday. When I picked it up the SA told me that the reman tranny had not only the clutch pack replaced, but was a new tranny - from the factory. The clutch pack was the problem, but the guts are ALL NEW. They don't send out a tranny with wear and tear on the parts.

I'm personally glad that some people were able to try out the software programs and clutch pack repair in the early stages of this problem so that the rest of us could reap the rewards. BMW is certainly not going to try to train techs to do bench repair on trannies. They did enough work early, using factory techs, to identify the ultimate fix. Now they perform the fix at the factory and send out new trannies as a replacement. It's just a bolt in deal for the dealers. Mine was ready in one morning.

Anyway, Some people on this board have been very helpful - THANKS! Others seem only to want to create problems for BMW with complaints and lawsuits. Still others can't seem to understand that you have to work through a problem (ie: do some software upgrades & clutch pack repairs) early to find out what the ultimate fix is.

My suggestion is... Get your car fixed (THE REPAIR IS AVAILABLE TO ANYONE WITH THE PROBLEM) and go enjoy it. Life's too short to only be happy when you're bitching.[wave]

This is absolutely true. The REMAN trannys (from what dealer told me) have all new parts (except the casing). But the clutch pack is where the design changes were made that fix the problem.

Now that is some great news indeed. We are fortunate to have someone so well connected with BMW. Now please get it in writing so the rest of us can speak intelligibly with our respective dealers

When do your contacts sharing all this information with you think the recall will be issused? For your information you might also ask them the name of the document that is ditributed internally prior to a TSB(which by law must be available to the pubilc). Surely, all would agree it is not fair that for only you and fellow board members to get the fix.

Thanks [wave]

I too am interseted in this information. After all of this whining and complaing is over, after all of these shade tree mechancis have changed their minds so many times and BMW has come clean about the defect I plan on ordering my car. Most of us that are repeat customers have grown to expect exceptional vehicles delivered free of defect. I hope that BMW plans on returning to that standard vs becomming like as some on here have said "all car manufacturers act this way" the lower standard. BMW needs to speak with one voice and help us regain some faith in thier product.[thumb]

What say you cdotger to this person who has accepted the dealerships "software upgrade". You said stated confidently "we all know better now"? Clearly you did not include him in your group working with BMW. Maybe if you called on BMW to be forthright and speak to this issue this person and the many that will follow could have avoided this despicable example of poor corporate governance. For shame.

Mr. Car_54 Sir, let me ask you a question. How do you know that there haven't been more than one issue reported with BMW E46 trannys? How do you know that this person even has a GM tranny? If you weren't so hostile and dead set on attacking people, you would have been patient enough to do some research and ensure that you're right before you go on the attack.

There have been other "unrelated" tranny issues reported with E46s and there is actually a legitmate fix that is software-based. Do some more searches on this board and on Roadfly.

The TSB (technical service bulletin SIB 24 07 03) you refer as mine, is in fact a BMW published document. This document is mandated to be made public by NHTSA and DOT.

All of this information is easily available at the follolwing:

Car_54,

You are just a plain idiot, hell bent on causing issues.... That software upgrade was for a diff issue not the tranny slipping problem. Are you to dumb to see the diff? Wake up and get a life.

Car 54 is correct. He has told people from day one that the software and clutch patch was not the solution. Those familiar with this thread recall the truth and know about the few people that seem to have lots of time to repeatedly discredit others. Some have asked the same questions for months without ever saying hmmm there is a pattern here. Others say they are working with BMW, others know owners wives etc this has gone from helpful to just plain silly. People the ONLY SANCTIONED REPAIR TO THE DEFECTIVE STEPTRONIC TRANSMISSION IS REPLACEMENT. All these others engaging in thier daily circle jerk are simply uninformed. The truthful acknowledgement from BMW is nearing. Another thread speaks of the voluntary recall. Read it and learn. [wave]
